Chesapeake Fine Arts Commission Meeting Minutes August 17th, 2023 This meeting of the Chesapeake Fine Arts Commission was held on June 15th at the Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism Administrative Office. Chair Wigginton called the meeting to order at 6:30 p.m. ANNOUNCEMENTS The following announcements were made: • The meeting is being recorded. • Meeting information for this Commission, along with provisions for public access, is posted on the Chesapeake Fine Arts Commission web page. • Essential business of the Chesapeake Fine Arts Commission is being conducted during this meeting. Members Present: Homer Babbitt, Jon Berry, Nathan Croslin (Vice-Chair), Efrem Graham, Catherine Magill, , Adrianna Rivera, Rose Ward, Members Absent: Daniel Booth, Michele Catalano, , Barbara Harrington, Joy Naik, Kim Painter, Angelo Reyes, Lisa Wigginton (Chair) Staff Present: Mike Barber, Joe Ruthenberg ROLL CALL Joe Ruthenberg called the roll. Attendance reflected a quorum with 8 voting members present, and 7 voting members absent. MINUTES: Approval of Meeting Minutes: June meeting minutes were distributed and approved. REPORTS: a. Committee Reports: Fundraising/ Budget/Long Term Events: • Commissioner Berry updated everyone on the latest figures and information regarding the Chesapeake Arts Weekend taking place April 20th and 21st at Chesapeake City Park. Grants • It was discussed by the commission to begin reviewing the grant application process at the October meeting and make any changes that are needed. • The liaison duties and process were also discussed and any updates or changes that are recommended should be completed before the new grant application is available. • Public Art/ Individual Artists – o Public Art – The bylaws have been approved and the committee is now able to conduct regular business. The committee is looking for additional members outside of the Fine Arts Commission members to fill out the remaining spots. UNFINISHED BUSINESS: • No updates. NEW BUSINESS: • There was a discussion about hosting another open house for the grant organizations at the Chesapeake Conference Center in November. The purpose of the open house would be to garner feedback from the grantees and also give them a better understand of the Commission’s goals for the arts in Chesapeake. CITY BUSINESS: • Symphony Under the Stars at Chesapeake City Park on September 3 at 7:30 p.m. • The 9/11 Ceremony of Remembrance will be taking place at the memorial at Chesapeake City Park on September 11th at 8:30 a.m. • Chesapeake Celebrates Trees at the Chesapeake Arboretum on October 7 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., tree giveaways, music, games and activities for all ages. ADJOURNMENT: The meeting was adjourned at 7:13 p.m. NEXT MEETING: The next meeting will be on Thursday, October 19, at 6:30 pm at the Parks, Recreation and Tourism Administrative Office, 1224 Progressive Drive.
