Parks and Recreation Commission Meeting Agenda Tuesday, May 28, 2024 7:00 p.m. A. Call meeting to order:7:00PM Attendance: Maureen Buxton, Nancy Fenton, Hugo Destapado; Absent: Ashley Ziemba B. Minutes of last meeting: no minutes, tabled until June 2024 meeting C. Approval of Bills: Warrants dated May 3rd and May 24th Motion to approve by Hugo, seconded by Nancy, all in favor D. Public Input: Each speaker is asked to direct their comments to the Chair and keep their remarks to 5 minutes. None E. Communications: 1. Request from Mayor Vieau’s Office and the Willamansett C3 Unit to use Wisniowski Park for a Dominoes Tournament on August 17th from 8:00AM to 5:00PM. Motion to approve by Hugo, seconded by Nancy all in favor 2. Request from Brent Dillard to run a high school soccer clinic on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from July 16th to August 15th at Williams and Ike Alpert Parks. Motion to approve by Nancy, seconded by Hugo all in favor 3. Request from Paul Langevin to use Ike Alpert for CHS Boys Summer Soccer games. There will be 8-10 total games. Motion to approve by Nancy, seconded by Maureen; Hugo abstained due to potential conflict of interest. 4. Request from Lidya Early to hold the 3rd Annual Fitness Fest and 5K Run/Walk at Szot Park on September 14th from 9AM to 2PM. Motion to approve by Hugo, seconded by Nancy, all in favor 5. Request from Carolyn Raymond to hold a small Wedding ceremony at the Szot Park gazebo on June 11th. Motion to approve by Nancy, seconded by Hugo, all in favor 6. Other Communications None F. Maintenance Report: 1. Parks Labor Force: Current Park openings: (4) 5L – MEO/Laborer (1) 4L – Laborer (3) Seasonal Temporary Laborers. All other positions are filled. G. Recreation Report: 1. Adult Rec Programs: Tang Soo Do Korean Martial Arts. Women’s Outdoor Bootcamp. 2. Adult Rec Leagues: Softball – Games on-going. 3. Youth Rec Leagues: Baseball/Softball – Games on-going. Gold Star Zoo – On-going. 4. Youth Rec Programs: Tang Soo Do Korean Martial Arts. Sport Explorers – Beginning after July 4th. Boys Basketball Clinic – July 22-26. Girls Basketball Clinic – July 29-Aug 2. 5. Safety: CPR/AED/First Aid Class – June 22nd 6. OPEE: July 1st – August 9th 7. Concerts: Aldenville Summer Concerts – Tuesdays beginning July 2nd through August 14th 8. Events: Movie Nights – May 4th. CHS Graduation – June 6th. Pride Fest – June 15th Fireworks – June 29th. 911 Dog Park ribbon cutting/grand opening June 1, 2024 9. Aquatics: Swim Lessons – Beginning July 9th. Lifeguard Cert/Re-Cert Classes. 10. Trips: Boston Red Sox at Baltimore Orioles – August 16-18 11. Recreation openings: Lifeguards, Head Lifeguards, Park Attendants, Bathhouse Attendants, Soccer Referees H. Old Business: 1. Bemis Pond Dam Removal – Construction on-going. Planning for Phase II. 2. Open Space and Recreation Plan Renewal – Planning Board endorsement and submission 3. Post 9/11 and Service Dog Memorial Park – Opening June 1st , 10AM-Nancy and Ashley to represent the commission as Hugo and Maureen had previous commitments 4. Pool Improvements – Rivers – On-going. Held up slightly due to weather 5. Szot Master Plan – Final concepts and programming. No date yet, waiting on RDLA for plan 6. CDBG Project – Sarah Jane Splash Pad – Design on-going. Pool removal plans. Funds currently frozen, will get update at June meeting 7. Pool Removal – Szot Clean Up Area Waiting on bib, start date is tentatively early July, 2024 8. Williams Tennis and Pickleball Courts – Design complete. 9. Szot Tennis Court Repairs – Work to begin after HS season. 10. Hispanic American Library Event at Sarah Jane Park After lots of discussion and a brief conversation with the mayor on speaker phone, Nancy made an initial approval of availability of Sarah Jane park for 8/31 & 9/1 with further approval contingent upon obtaining the special events permit and final approval by the Park Commission. Event fees will be agreed upon at this time also. Hugo seconded the motion and all were in favor. 11. Other Old Business None I. New Business: 1. Youth Sports Fees State Representative Shirley Arriaga is earmarking money in the state budget to offset children’s sports fees. More to come on that as Ben learns more. 2. Other New Business None J.
