Parks and Recreation Commission Meeting Agenda Wednesday, September 25, 2024 7:00 p.m. A. Call meeting to order: 7:01pm by Comm Buxton. Second by Commissioner Fenton. Commissioner Buxton stated that that meeting was being recorded. Attendance: Commissioners Buxton, Destapado, Fenton, Ziemba, & Parks Superintendent Strepka and Sean Carroll. B. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Motion for approval of minutes for the August 15h, 2024 meeting made by Comm Destapado, Second by Comm Fenton. C. Approval of Bills: Warrants dated August 23rd, September 13th September 20th and October 4th - Motion for approval - Commissioner Ziemba, second by Comm Fenton. D. Public Input: Each speaker is asked to direct their comments to the Chair and keep their remarks to 5 minutes. - Eric Lapointe - speaking on behalf of the Chicopee suburban basketball program - would like to speak on behalf of splitting the boy's basketball program into an A and B program, not based on physical address. States that Chicopee is the only city that splits based on city location. HS coaches could still be involved in both programs. 24/25 registrations have not been set up yet, nor have tryout dates/information been set up yet so he feels as if it is not too late to make the decision. Motion to return to regular meeting - Commissioner Destapado, second Commissioner Fenton E. Communications: 1. Request from Galaxy Football to use the upper Szot football field for some dates for JV Football games. Motion to approve that there is no conflict and they fill out appropriate waivers - Commissioner Buxton, second Commissioner Fenton 2. Request from Chloe Soto for use of Szot Park for The City's Halloween Spooktacular Event - Motion to approve Commissioner Fenton, second Commissioner Destapado - Please Post rain date 3. Request from Brent Dillard Gold Star Soccer for use of Williams Park for the Fall Zoo Program Already voted via text communication 8/22 Motion to approve Commissioner Ziemba, Second Commissioner Fenton 4.. Request - William McDonald St Joan - Ray Ashe - 9/27 Walk a Thon 5/16 or rain date of 5/19 Field Day and bathrooms Motion to approve Commissioner Fenton, Commissioner Destapado 5.. Pentecostal Church - Aldenville Commons/Gazebo - Church service (25 members) (No date listed) - Tabled 6. Gelina Ortiz - Lincoln Grove Park or Szot - to bring in an arcade truck - Denied Maintenance Report: 1. Parks Labor Force: Current Park openings: (4) 5L - MEO/Laborer All other positions are filled. F. Recreation Report: 1. Adult Rec Programs: Tang Soo Do Korean Martial Arts. 2. Adult Rec Leagues: Volleyball League Meeting 9/24 Games to Start 10/21 Basketball meetings --- TBA Games to begin weekend of December 14th 3. Youth Rec Leagues: Gold Star Zoo Soccer Started 9/7. Youth Soccer - The season started 9/14 ongoing. • Suburban Tryouts -- October 15th-18th Basketball Meetings - Rec. coordinator meeting September 18th, Suburban September 25th and October 3rd 4. Youth Rec Programs: Tang Soo Do Korean Martial Arts. 5. Clinics @ Dupont: Girls Preseason Basketball --- September 11th, 18th, 25th Oct 2nd and Oct 9th. 6. Safety: CPR/AED/First Aid Class - February 2025; Babysitting - December 6th 7. Events: Lorraine's Event - October 5th; Kane's Krusade Szot 5K -- October 19th; Halloween Spooktacular - October 24th; Thriller 5K October 26th. 8. Aldenville Summer Concerts: Complete = Grants have been submitted to the 2025 Season for Concerts and Fireworks. 9. Aquatics: Splash Pads- Shut down for the season. Swim Lessons to be held in Winter either before or after open swim. 10. The Opee Survey was sent out via email. 11. Community Garden: Fall Clean up day Saturday, October 5th. 12. Recreation openings: Basketball Referees and Scorekeepers. G. Old Business: 1. Bemis Pond Dam Removal - Construction ongoing. Planning for Phase II. Vehicle gates at entrances - access for maintenance. 2. Szot Master Plan --- Planning Community Input and Phase I design. A tour in November is being planned, and will let commissioners know asap when it is set. 3. CDBG Project - Sarah Jane Splash Pad - Pool removal plans. 4. Pool Removal - Szot Clean-Up Area 5. NRPA Virtual Conference - October 8-10 All have access to it virtually 6. Fireworks Safety Meeting - Fire, Police, Sean, let them know our concerns. Chief will up the officers to 12 and pair them in 2’s to circulate and then separate them half and half for directing traffic. 7. Other Old Business H. New Business: 1. Suburban Basketball - Commissioners Buxton gave an update about their meeting last Tuesday with HS coaches and suburban coaches regarding changing the format of the suburban boys basketball program. - Motion to split the program into levels of development not by location - Commissioner Ziemba, Second Commissioner Fenton 2. Suburban Survey • Emphasis on parent's meeting to review expectations and code of conduct throughout the season. 3. Parks Update - cleanup at cemeteries 4. New gang mower YAY - ordered, will be here soon 5. Other New Business Eric will meet 10/8 and should be voted in on 10/15 I.
