Tree Board Minutes
June 10th, 2020 at 2:30 pm
Zoom Meeting
Attendance: Wes Powell, Joey Redman, Dottie Mann, Ron Erb, and Kathrine
Killebrew
1. Wes made a motion to have the meeting virtually to prevent the spread of
Covid 19. Ron seconded and the motion passes.
2. Ron made a motion to approve the minutes from May. Brian seconded and
the motion passed.
3. Wes said that the Tennessee State Nursery won’t be taking orders until
September. The board can discuss what trees to order for 2021 give-aways.
4. There has been no response from Hazelwood Elementary for potentially
hosting a fall Arbor Day Celebration. We will plan on doing it at one of our
city parks. Dottie mentioned maybe having the ribbon cutting ceremony
for the Arboretum at the same time. We will reach out to state forestry to
see if the state would be interested in moving the official state Arbor Day to
the fall since that is the best time plant trees.
5. Ron informed the board that the City council has passed a “no frills” budget
where we will have a base amount of funds available and other request will
be evaluated on an ‘as needed’ basis.
6. Wes mentioned that we have 5 of the 6 sections for the Citizen Forester
program covered. Dottie will reach out to John Woodcock with TN Forestry
or Neil Letson with TUFC to see if they would be willing to cover a section.
This program will start in mid October and go into November with at least
one site visit for practical examples.
With no further business the meeting was adjourned.

Zoom Meeting
Attendance: Wes Powell, Joey Redman, Alexandra Wills, Ron Erb, and Kathrine
Killebrew
1. Wes made a motion to have the meeting virtually to prevent the spread of
Covid 19. Ron seconded and the motion passes.
2. Kathrine is looking for some 2”-2.5” Green Vase Zelkovas to replace ones
that died at the overlook.
3. Kathrine updated the board on the 25 TAEP Grant trees. They were planted
at Billy Dunlop Park by a group of ROTC volunteers. The trees will serve as
a riparian buffer along the river. This will be inspected by the state this
month. The 2020 TAEP grant trees will be to create another riparian buffer
at Trice Landing using 25 trees along with smaller seedlings and shrubs.
4. COVID 19 caused all gatherings to be cancelled or postponed to include the
city’s Arbor Day Celebration at Hazelwood Elementary. Wes will reach out
to the principal to see if they would like to host this event in the fall.
Possibly the week prior to Fall Break.
5. Kathrine brought up that we need to start planning for an Arboretum
ribbon cutting ceremony. She plans to add tree information to the Plants
Map website this month.
6. Wes let the board know that the Tree Board budget request was submitted.
This included $2,000 for tree and tree related purchases, $1,000 for
conferences, $1,000 for promotional items and $70,000 for an inventory
and management software. Ron stated that the budgets were being
reviewed this month.
With no further business the meeting was adjourned.
