Continuing business: City Forester Update – Kathrine • New 2022 TAEP grant was approved by the State. • Riverside trees progress report: • Seedlings have been ordered for March 3rd, 2023 Arbor Day Tree Give-a-way. o The USDA office has ordered and donated 250 trees for this! Old business: 1. Big Tree Contest and Landmark Tree Program • Distribute flyer to social media etc. 2. Arbor Day Celebration-New date is October 14th at 11am at Liberty Park. • City Council Resolution Date? - Art Winners 4. Arbor Day Tree Distribution-March 3rd, 2023. Karla has requested permission from Parks (Monica Gonzales) to utilize the Triumph pavilion at Liberty Park for the tree give-a-away. 5. The Tennessee Environmental Council TN Tree Day will be held March 17th from 9:00 am – 5:00 pm; and March 18th from 9:00 am -2:00 pm. Karla received permission from Parks (: Jennifer Letourneau and Emily Graves) to utilize the pavilion at Edith Pettus Park 6. Updates on Tree Inventory & Tree Canopy Study New business: 1. Discuss setting up By-laws for the Board-table full discussion until all vacancies are filled. Plan to develop sub-committee to work on writing of by-laws. 2. Sustainability Board Event-Efficiency Expo Details: • September 24, 2022 at the Burt Cobb Recreation Center 10am-noon • Several Master Gardener volunteers are interested and will conduct the youth activity. We plan make pine cone bird feeders and grass-heads. Plus, we will have educational information available for adults. • Supplies needed for grass-heads: recyclable coffee cups, colored sharpies, women’s nylon hose (knee high’s work great), potting soil, grass seed, printed directions, paper bags (like old lunch bags)- • Supplies needed for pine cone bird feeders: pine cones, string, peanut butter, bird seed Other business: • TUFC Conference Nov 9 and 10 at Montgomery Bell State Park • Discussion: Tree donation recommended by Jeff Robinson for the downtown area. In attendance, Kathrine Killebrew, Karla Gargus, Alexandria Wills, Karen Reynolds, Michael Palmore, Cindy Miller. Meeting called to Order by Chairperson Karla. The minutes from the last meeting in June were approved. Continuing business: Kathrine reported that the TAEP Grant for 2022 was approved by the State. Purchase order is in progress and will be sent to Heather Farms to order/reserve trees for the fall planting. Riverside Tree project- 4 more standing trees to remove and 42 tree wells to auger out. Gas & Water will be helping with the tree well excavation due to gas and water lines near the tree wells and end of September the trees should be planted. The Tennessee Environmental Council TN Tree Day held by will be March 17th from 9:00 am – 5:00 pm; and March 18th from 9:00am -2:00 pm. They have asked us once again to be a distributor for the trees for Clarksville and Kathrine has agreed. We will need to seek permission from Parks once again to utilize the pavilion at Edith Pettus Park for tree seedling distribution that day. The trees distributed are a vital part of our canopy rates. The Tree Board/Forestry does receive 50 free trees for being a distribution hub. These trees are purchased from their website by local patrons in fall. Karla will contact Jennifer with Parks about using the pavilion. Arbor Day celebration was also mentioned in giving away trees which is the first Friday in March. A different location was suggested instead of the Smith Trahern Mansion site due to the increasing interest in obtaining seedlings from patrons which caused a traffic jam in the neighborhood. An alternate site was discussed and Liberty Park seemed like a good match. Karla will contact Jennifer about using the park for tree pickup in March. Also, a reminder was brought up about Arbor Celebration for this fall to complete our Tree City USA requirements. The date was October 28th at 11 am, and the list of trees to plant has already been discussed. These trees will be planted in honor of the Tree art contest winners that have been already selected previously. It was also discussed to have the recipients receive their certificate during a City Council meeting. A date of October 4th was picked. An alternate date was selected for 14th of October so the award winners will be able to attend the planting of their trees. A motion was made to move the date for our official Arbor Day from October 28th to October 14th (Arbor Day Proclamation will be needed) A motion was made to move the date from October 28th to October 14th by Karla, all Tree Board members agreed. Big Tree Contest and Landmark Program: was started in April. It was discussed to bring more awareness to this program and it was suggested to give it a social media push and share with the Master Gardeners and also with City Communications. Landmark trees are protected by Building & Codes. There are three vacancies with the Tree Board that need to be filled. Karla did discuss this with the Mayor but no word yet on who is eligible for these slots. New Business: TUFC conference Nov 9 & 10th at Montgomery Bell State Park. Fee for event will be $200 for nonmember and $150 for standing members. Tree Board and Forestry has been asked to give a talk on Tree Board Effectiveness for our community. Kathrine plans on attending and the Tree Board will possibly send a few members also. A need for By-laws for the Tree Board was tabled due to time constraints. A subcommittee will be need for this. Karen Reynolds needs the Tree Board to help with the Sustainability Event at Burt Cobb September 24th from 10- 12 to talk about tree care for the fall and spring. The Tree Board members agreed to go and help that day. Due to time constraints the Tree Donation recommended by Jeff Robinson for the downtown area was tabled. Follow these steps: Step 1: Using the felt pens, draw a face on the outside of your cup. Step 2: Take the stocking filled with potting mix and soak it in a bowl overnight. Step 3: Put the stocking seed mix in your decorated cup. Make sure the toe part of the stocking is facing up, and the tied part is at the bottom of the cup. Step 4: Keep the stocking seed mix moist. You will see some little shoots come up in a less than a week. Step 5: Give your grass head a hair cut from time to time. Step 6: Keep watering so the grass will continue to grow.
