College Park Seniors Committee City Hall – Council Chambers April 3, 2019 7:00 PM FINAL MINUTES Seniors Committee Members: PRESENT ABSENT Pedro Manuel Guevara-Cordova X 7:13 pm Victoria Evans X Mary Anne Hakes X Jackie Kelly X Bonnie McClellan X Darlene Nowlin X 7:13 pm Arelis Perez X Rosemary Perticari X Also present: Carl Patterson, Resident; James McFadden (7:13 pm), Resident; Peggy Higgins, Youth and Family Services; Joi Woods, Contract Secretary I. Call to Order Mrs. Hakes called the meeting to order at 7:03 p.m. II. Old Business A. Approval of the March 6, 2019 Minutes Mr. Thurston motioned to approve the March 6, 2019 minutes as written. Mrs. Evans motioned seconded the motion. All were in favor, none opposed. The motion passed. B. Prioritizing Committee Topics The committee discussed strategies to identify priorities among the scope of work, including speakers and experts to provide insight • AARP • Maryland Department of Aging- Community Life • City’s Planning Department C. Other priorities discussed included: 1). Technology Initiatives (Alexa Devices) • The committee is sponsoring two sessions in April to introduce Alexa devices. • UMD Graduate Students will provide seniors with an overview demonstration of the device. • Future sessions and distribution of the devices will be contingent upon interest. • The committee revisited the idea of contacting major telecom companies to inquire about free or discounted Wi-Fi service for seniors to use Alexa devices. 2). Support Promotion and Expansion for NHN-CP • The board discussed efforts support the growth of NHN-CP • A link is pending from the city’s website to the NHN-CP website • Volunteer recruitment and registration -Creating flier and registration form • Engaging students in the volunteer network 3). Exploration of partnerships The committee discussed partnering with UMD, The Clarice, Rec Board, CP Scholars, local fitness companies, and Meals on Wheels 4). Age friendly communities • The committee discussed current aging in place initiatives and funds allocations at the state and county levels • Assessing community resources for seniors • Greenplay recreational survey o The survey will capture information about recreation needs and transportation for residents, seniors, in the city Ms. Nolin will forward information about Age friendly Communities 5). Communications • The committee discussed communication ideas for seniors who do not use technology • Acquiring commercial lists of senior residents’ addresses • Publicizing information through websites (city & NHN-CP) 6). Senior Incentives • Senior Fair featuring local businesses who offer discounts and incentives for seniors III. New Business A. Senior Committee Social Sunday, May 5, 2019, time TBD • The committee discussed having a potluck social event at Mrs. McClellan’s home IV. Adjournment Mrs. Evans motioned to adjourn the meeting. Mr. Manuel Guevara-Cordova seconded the motion. All were in favor, none opposed. The motion passed. The meeting was adjourned at 8:57 p.m.
