College Park Seniors Committee Old Parish House February 5, 2020 7:00 PM Final Minutes Seniors Committee Members: PRESENT ABSENT 1. Ann Bolduc X 2. Pedro Manuel Guevara-Cordova X 3. Victoria Evans X 4. Mary Anne Hakes X 5. Bonnie McClellan X 6. Darlene Nowlin X 7. Arelis Perez X 8. Rosemary Perticari X 9. Lynn Topp X 10. Robert Thurston X Also present: John Payne, Neighbors Helping Neighbors; Joi Woods, Contract Secretary I. Call to Order Mrs. Hakes called the meeting to order at 7:13 p.m. II. Old Business A. Approval of the November 6, 2019 Minutes Ms. Perez motioned to approve the November 6, 2019 minutes as written. Mrs. McClellan seconded the motion. All were in favor, none opposed. The motion passed. III. Attendance and Membership Updates A. Membership Jackie Kelly resigned from the Committee. The committee discussed current vacancies, there are currently 1-2 vacancies o Mrs. Bolduc recommended Darlene White B. Attendance The Committee discussed attendance requirements to maintain official membership Mrs. Hakes noted that Miss. Topp is excused from the meeting IV. Neighbors Helping Neighbors College Park (NHN-CP) Update 1 A. Mr. Payne provided an update about current efforts and progress. Noted points of discussion included: Volunteer recruitment Board Member recruitment o NHN-CP is currently seeking approximately 5 board members. Request trends o Challenges and disparities to fulfill requests o Mr. Payne noted requests for hauling, lifting, and home repairs. o Volunteers are unable to fulfill physically demanding tasks Opportunities to engage City Council members to learn about the needs of residents in each district Marketing and outreach opportunities to create visibility among neighborhoods Working with the Office of Community Engagement to Sponsor external home repairs for 2 senior residents during Good Neighbor Day Mr. Payne is meeting with leaders from neighboring villages V. Senior Social Update: Spring Fling A. Mr. Guevara-Cordova shared an update about Senior Social Event planning. Noted points of discussion included: Venues and Logistics: o Milk Boys Art House o Old Parish House o The Hall- Mr. Guevara-Cordova toured the venue and noted the following details: -Venue pricing is pending -Audio-visual accommodations -Outdoor space available -Estimate for 200 attendees -Seating for 100; standing room for 300 attendees Music artists and bands VI. Events and Announcements A. Mrs. Bolduc shared details about upcoming Senior Programs fitness, music, and social events for senior residents. B. Mrs. McClellan shared upcoming events hosted by Explorations on Aging Art Show- UM Catholic Student March 13, 2020 Health Eating, Healthy Aging- UMD interviews with Senior Residents to assess to nutritious meals C. Ms. Perez shared details a Human Trafficking prevention event - March 23, 2020 VII. AARP Age Friendly Community Initiative follow up 2 Mrs. McClellan solicited feedback from the committee about next steps to pursue AARP's Age-Friendly Community initiative in College Park. Ms. Perez made a motion to recommend to amend and lower the Senior Age Eligibility requirement in the city to create opportunities to reach a broader senior population within College Park. Mrs. Hakes suggested conferring with Mrs. Barber, Committee Liaison to gain additional insight. VIII. Next Meeting: Wednesday, March 4, 2020 The committee discussed inviting the Communications Department and Terry Schum, Director of Planning and Development pending a presentation from Mr. Somers, City Manager. IX. Adjournment Ms. Perez motioned to adjourn the meeting. Mr. Guevara-Cordova seconded the motion. All were in favor, none opposed. The motion passed. The meeting was adjourned at 9:14 p.m. 3
