Approved: 05/18/17 Minutes Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Tribute Committee Thursday, March 16, 2017 7:00 p.m. City Hall, Lower Level Conference Room Members Present Absent Lilla Sutton, Co-Chair X Anita Wolley, Co-chair X Dottie Chicquelo X Britney Crawford X Dorie Arbach X Thelma Lomax, Honorary Member X Also Present Monroe Dennis, Councilmember District Two X Sharon Fletcher, Staff Liaison X Carleveva Thompson, Contract Secretary X I. Call to Order Ms. Wolley called the meeting to order at 7:03pm. II. Review, Amendment and Approval of Agenda The agenda was reviewed by those present but there was not a quorum to vote on approval of the agenda. III. Reading and Approval of 02/16/17 minutes Minutes of the February 16th meeting were reviewed by those present but there was not a quorum to vote on approval of the minutes. IV. Planning for 2018 Event a. Venue Confirmed for 01/13/2018 The Clarice Smith Kay Theater was selected as the venue and is confirmed for Saturday, January 13, 2018 and the theater is willing to accommodate a later start time for the event. Ms. Fletcher has submitted the request for the rent credit. b. Selection of Event Theme Ms. Chicquelo provided the committee information on Sahar Mohamed Khamis and suggested Ms. Khamis as the Keynote speaker. Ms. Fletcher stated that in past events, a Keynote speaker has selected a theme. A theme needs to be selected by the May 18 th meeting. Ms. Wolley provided the following theme suggestions: “Everyone Can Be Great Because Everyone Can Serve” “We Must Learn To Live Together As Brothers Or Perish Together As Fools”. Ms. Fletcher stated the committee can connect with local schools to get participation in writing or recognition of service. Ms. Fletcher suggested to invite Ms. Whitehead from Friends Community School to a committee meeting to make suggestions to get local schools more involved. c. Program Format There was discussion on needing to change the program format if the event will focus on service. Ms. Fletcher suggested to have event performers recognize a person of service on stage or have schools designate a person to recognize. V. Other Business a. Ms. Fletcher stated there is no scheduled meeting for April and that one can be scheduled if members would like to meet before the May meeting. b. The members present discussed the possibility of planning a snow date and if this would be feasible for the performers. VI. Adjournment Ms. Wolley adjourned the meeting at 7:42pm. VII. Next Meeting Next meeting is scheduled for May 18, 2017 at 7:00pm.
