Approved: 051619 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Tribute Committee Thursday, April 18, 2019 7:00 p.m. City Hall, Lower Level Conference Room Members Present Absent Lilla Sutton, Co-Chair X Anita Wolley, Co-chair X Dottie Chicquelo X Jordan Schakner X Thelma Lomax, Honorary Member X Sue Rishworth, Honorary Member X Staff and Others Monroe Dennis, Councilmember District Two X Sharon Fletcher, Staff Liaison X Carleveva Thompson, Contract Secretary X Joseph Morris, Guest X I. Call to Order Ms. Sutton called the meeting to order at 7:09 p.m. II. Review and Approval of Agenda The Committee reviewed the meeting agenda. Ms. Wolley motioned to approve the agenda as presented. Second by Mr. Schakner. All members were in favor; none opposed. III. Reading and Approval of 03/21/19 Meeting Minutes The Committee reviewed the meeting minutes from the March 21, 2019 meeting. Ms. Wolley made a motion to approve the March 21, 2019 meeting minutes as written. Second by Mr. Schakner. All members were in favor; none opposed. IV. Membership The committee discussed reaching out to Andy Fellows, Robert Thurston, and Cameron Thurston as potential members. Ms. Fletcher will send applications to those interested in becoming a member. Ms. Fletcher will check the current member’s terms and confirm the process for re-appointment. V. 2020 event 1 a. Venue options – The Dance theater at the Clarice Smith is a smaller theater with cheaper cost. The committee will decide by next meeting which theater to select as the venue. b. Format Options – The committee decided to go forward with the panel discussion format. The panel selected will include Bonnie Thornton Dill, a member of the Synagogue, and Jay Winter Nightwolf. c. Program Format – 1-hour panel discussion with questions and 1- hour performances o Welcome o Video of lift every voice and sing o 2 Performances o Mayor reading the Proclamation o 2 more performances o Panel discussion o Final song to end program Possible MCs for the event are Reese Waters, Donnie Simpson or Tony Perkins. d. Stage Manager - Mr. Shackner will be the stage manager for the 2020 event. For sound check, members have to ensure performers are lined up and direct them to designated areas. e. Groups to invite Friend’s school chorus SGI chorus Baha’i Chorale f. Promotions – The committee discussed promoting the event as a live production to attract a bigger audience. g. The committee discussed polling the community on what direction they would like to see on the program. VI. Other Business a. The committee discussed planning a visit to see Ms. Lomax. Ms. Wolley will check with her son to see if this will be okay. b. The meetings will be held in the Lakeland room at the College Park Community Center beginning in September 2019. VII. Adjournment Ms. Sutton adjourned the meeting at 7:59 p.m. 2
