FINAL Minutes Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Tribute Committee Thursday, May 16, 2019 7:00 p.m. City Hall, Lower Level Conference Room Members Present Absent Lilla Sutton, Co-Chair X Anita Wolley, Co-chair X Dottie Chicquelo X Jordan Schakner X Thelma Lomax, Honorary Member X Sue Rishworth, Honorary Member X Staff and Others Monroe Dennis, Councilmember District Two X Sharon Fletcher, Staff Liaison X Carleveva Thompson, Contract Secretary X Andy Fellows, Guest X I. Call to Order Ms. Sutton called the meeting to order at 7:01 p.m. II. Review and Approval of Agenda The Committee reviewed the meeting agenda. Ms. Chicquelo motioned to approve the agenda as presented. Second by Ms. Wolley. All members were in favor; none opposed. III. Reading and Approval of 04/18/19 Meeting Minutes The Committee reviewed the meeting minutes from the April 18, 2019 meeting. Ms. Wolley made a motion to approve the April 18, 2019 meeting minutes as written. Second by Mr. Schakner. All members were in favor; none opposed. IV. Membership Mr. Fellows will complete an application to join the committee. Ms. Fletcher discussed providing a detailed statement to include on the City cable stations and website in regards to membership and what residents would like to see in the program. Ms. Fletcher proposed the following statement: “The City’s MLK Tribute Committee is seeking input from the Community in support of the annual program. Please contact Public Services if you have suggestions for the event. For more information about the Committee’s mission, please visit [website].” 1 V. 2020 event a. Venue options The Committee is still deciding between the Kay Theatre and the Dance Theatre at the Clarice Smith for the 2020 event. b. Format Options The program format will include a panel with possibly a member of a Synagogue, Bonnie Thornton Dill, and Jay Winter Nightwolf. One additional panel member is needed. The panel should include an older adult (40+), middle aged adult (25-35), young adult (18-25), and a younger adult (<18). Ms. Wolley suggested to play Stevie Wonder’s Happy Birthday to Dr. King song during the program. c. MC Ms. Sutton reached out to Reese Waters and Congressman Thompson as possible MCs, but has not received a response back. Ms. Sutton will also check with Donnie Simpson and Tony Perkins. Ms. Chicquelo suggested William Reed as a possible Facilitator/MC. d. Groups to invite • Friend’s school chorus • SGI chorus • Baha’i Chorale • Café Steel Orchestra – Ms. Fletcher has reached out and is waiting to receive a response. VI. Adjournment Ms. Sutton adjourned the meeting at 8:05 p.m. 2
