Mr. Toledo made a motion to approve the August meeting minutes as presented. Second by Ms. Ellis. All members in favor; no opposed. Approval of the September Meeting Minutes The Committee reviewed the meeting minutes from the September 16, 2019 meeting. Ms. Aikara made a motion to approve the September meeting minutes as presented. Second by Mr. Toledo. All members in favor; no opposed. Update on College Park Day The Committee discussed the event of College Park Day. It was decided that two tables are needed for next year’s event. Table coverage ended earlier than the end time of the event. The Committee must ensure full table coverage is available for next year. It was decided to reduce the amount of older kid books and replace with younger kid books. Possibly add a disclaimer 1 that the EAC did not read the books selected. The Committee needs to have more elementary books for young boys for next year’s event. Update from Green School Awards Presentation Ms. Bernache presented a flyer to the Committee members that was provided to school principals on October 2, 2019. The flyer went to College Park Academy, Hollywood, Hyattsville Middle, Greenbelt, Buck Lodge, Cherokee, Parkdale, Paint Branch, Berwyn, and University Park. Nominations are due on December 20, 2019 and the awards will be announced on February 28, 2020. Update on EAC Grants The following schools had to provide clarification in order to have their grant approved: Paint Branch, High Point, and Berwyn Heights. Mr. Toledo motioned to approve the grants for each school that provided clarification. Second by Ms. Currie. All members were in favor; no opposed. The EAC reviewed the following grant applications: Cherokee Lane Elementary: $2,500 grant request for field trip transportation Ms. Aikara motioned to approve the Cherokee’s grant request. Second by Ms. Currie. All members in favor; no opposed. College Park Academy: $2,500 for field trip to learn recycling. Ms. Powers motioned to approve College Park Academy’s grant request. Second by Ms. Aikara. All members in favor; no opposed. Greenbelt Middle: $8,000 grant request for English is a Second Language (ESOL) extended learning opportunity. Ms. Bernache motioned to approve Greenbelt Middle’s grant request. Second by Mr. Toledo. All members in favor; no opposed. University Park: $2,500 grant request for Math for All Mr. Toledo motioned to approve University Park’s grant request. Second by Ms. Bernache. All members in favor; no opposed. Parkdale High School’s application is outstanding. Buck Lodge submitted an application but did not submit a report. New Business Review of the Committee on Committee Recommendations The Committee reviewed the following recommendations from the Committee on Committees: • Meet monthly during the school year and report to the Mayor and Council at least twice a year. • Establish strategies and programs to achieve the mission of and goals set by the Pilot EAC report. 2  • Make recommendations to the Mayor and Council on legislative matters that impact College Park residents. • Establish relationships with school principals, directors, PTAs, and school board representatives to identify issues and opportunities. • Work with City communications to develop improved resident information and communication. Based on the recommendations, the Committee will first ask if the City can invite neighborhood schools to join College Park Day. The next step is to reach out to the schools to get in contact with the PTA of each school. The third step would be to share information to each school. Letter concerning gun control Ms. Bernache asked Mayor Wojahn regarding a letter on gun control and the Mayor thinks it’s a good idea. College Park Academy is currently practicing drills for shooter on campus and fire drills. Ms. Bernache has not received a response from Joshua Thomas. Ms. Bernache asked the Committee if they would like to table this topic for the next meeting. 5 out of 6 members voted to table until the next EAC meeting. 1 out of 6 members requested to abstain from the letter. Ms. Bernache will ask Mayor Wojahn for any previous letters written by the City concerning gun control. Adjournment Ms. Bernache adjourned the meeting at 8:53 p.m. The next meeting is scheduled for November 18, 2019 at 7:30 p.m. 3
