Minutes Education Advisory Committee (EAC) April 19, 2021 Virtual Meeting Attendees Members Present Absent David Toledo, Dist 1 _X _ Vilay Senthep, Dist 1 _X _ Mary Daniel, Dist 2 _X _ Dawn Powers, Dist 2 _X _ Melissa Day, Dist 3 __X _ Rose Greene-Colby, Dist 3 _X _ (joined @ 7:49pm) Carolyn Bernache, Dist 4 _X _ Tessie Aikara, Dist 4 _X _ Also Present Kiaisha Barber, Staff Liaison Maria Mackie, District 4 Council Member Jessica Prentice, Clinical Supervisor Dr. Daniel Levin, University of Maryland Carleveva Thompson, Contract Secretary Call to Order Ms. Bernache called the meeting to order at 7:34 p.m. Old Business Approval of the March Meeting Minutes The Committee reviewed the meeting minutes from the March 15, 2021 meeting and edits were made to the minutes. Ms. Bernache motioned to approve the minutes as presented. Second by Ms. Aikara. All members in favor; no opposed; 6-0. Status of Principal’s Survey Ms. Barber provided an update that the survey was sent to the schools and eight responses have been received. Feedback on School Supply Distribution Ms. Barber provided an update that the schools received the school supplies. Glue sticks were on backorder, so there will be a follow-up to ensure the glue sticks are received. Review of work plan from City Council work session 1 The EAC reviewed the City Council’s strategic plan for improving the quality of education and learning opportunities for City students. Ms. Powers made a suggestion to check if the City can provide funding for PTA dues. The Committee will work on drafting a proposal to send to the City Council. Update on PPE Ms. Bernache emailed Dean Rice regarding the PPE issue and was informed that the University had the resources to provide PPE to the student. New Business School relocation issues – Cherokee Lane and Robert Goddard The Committee discussed the plan for relocation of schools due to construction at Hyattsville Middle. Cherokee Lane students were to be relocated to Middleton Valley Elementary, located in Camp Springs, MD, which would create a long commute for the students. Cherokee Lane students will now be relocated to Saint Marks. EAC Annual Book Purchase The EAC discussed ways to provide their annual book give-away to students, possibly at a City Farmer’s market or at a City Food Bank distribution. Prince Georges County MESA Competition Paint Branch Elementary had three 1st place winners and one 3rd place winner in the MESA competition. Ms. Powers informed the EAC that the MESA coordinator and head of the science department will write up a summary on the winners. Ms. Barber will provide the summary to the Mayor and City Council.
