Minutes Education Advisory Committee (EAC) April 18, 2022 Virtual Meeting Attendees Members Present Absent David Toledo, Dist 4 X Vilay Senthep, Dist 1 X Susan Miller, Dist 1 X Dawn Powers, Dist 2 X Melissa Day, Dist 3 X Carolyn Bernache, Dist 4 X Tessie Aikara, Dist 4 X Carson Peters, Dist 4 X Daniel Levin, UMD X Also Present Kiaisha Barber, Staff Liaison Carleveva Thompson, Contract Secretary Call to Order Ms. Bernache called the meeting to order at 7:34 p.m. Old Business Approval of the March Meeting Minutes The Committee reviewed the meeting minutes from the March 21, 2022, meeting. Ms. Aikara motioned to approve the minutes as presented. Second by Ms. Miller. All members in favor; no opposed. Motion carries, 8-0-0. Spring Book Distribution Plan The Committee will have 2 tables at Maryland Day on April 30th. 1 table will be located at the Mall and 1 table will be located in front of the Benjamin building in Tawes Plaza. The Committee reviewed the sign-up sheet and members signed up to cover the open time slots so both tables will have coverage. The books that will be distributed at the Mall are located at the Youth and Family Services building. Mr. Toledo will bring the books to his campus office that will be distributed at the Benjamin building. Update on Achievement Recognition The signs are located at the Youth and Family Services building. Ms. Miller volunteered to pick up the signs and will drop off the signs to the schools. School Supply Donation The school supplies were ordered and delivered to the schools. The schools were very thankful for the donation of school supplies. A teacher from Parkdale sent a request to the EAC for art supplies, however, since art supplies are a school system item, the Committee cannot provide the requested art supplies. Update on TECP tutoring proposal Ms. Barber provided an update that the City Council did not review the TECP proposal. The Committee will proceed with presenting to Council the TECP proposal which would cover $5,000 to support 10 students at Greenbelt Middle to participate in the program. New Business Remembrance for Rose Greene-Colby The Committee brainstormed ideas to conduct a remembrance for Ms. Greene-Colby. Ms. Greene-Colby was the program director of the 4H youth development program at the University of Maryland. Mr. Toledo will contact the 4H program leader to inform them that the EAC is planning a remembrance and to ask if there are suggestions on topics to support an essay contest. There was also a suggestion to contact her family to see if they are working on any event or activity that the EAC can join. Next Meeting The next meeting is scheduled on May 16, 2022, at 7:30 p.m. Adjournment Ms. Bernache adjourned the meeting at 8:15 p.m.
