Minutes Education Advisory Committee (EAC) February 27, 2023 Virtual Meeting Attendees Members Present Absent David Toledo, Dist 4 X Vilay Senthep, Dist 1 X Susan Miller, Dist 1 X Dawn Powers, Dist 2 X Carolyn Bernache, Dist 4 X Tessie Aikara, Dist 4 X Carson Peters, Dist 4 X Isaiah Warfield, Dist 2 X Daniel Levin, UMD X Also Present Maria Mackie, District 4 Councilmember Carleveva Thompson, Contract Secretary Call to Order Ms. Bernache called the meeting to order at 7:55 p.m. Old Business Approval of the January Meeting Minutes The Committee reviewed the meeting minutes from the January 23, 2023, meeting. Mr. Toledo motioned to approve the minutes as presented. Second by Ms. Aikara. All members in favor; no opposed. Motion carries, 7-0-0. Update on Achievement Recognition Strategies No updates were received from the remaining schools since the EAC’s last meeting. Ms. Bernache suggested sending an email to the principals to obtain feedback. Update on The Every Child Project (TECP) There are currently 3 students that are receiving tutoring. There are 5 dedicated tutors in the program and each tutor can take 2 students, which allows a total of 10 slots for tutoring. Ms. Bernache asked the Committee if they would like to open the available seats to Buck Lodge Middle School to fill the open slots in the program. Mr. Toledo motioned to include Buck Lodge in the TECP. Second by Ms. Miller. All members in favor; no opposed. Motion carries, 7-0-0. Update on Imagine Learning My Path Program There is approval for an educational support staff to support the program and it will be included in the FY2024 budget. This will go back to the Council for further discussion in April. School PTA funding A survey was sent to the schools and based on written responses from PTA leadership, the schools would like a set amount to use for parent engagement and activities. The Committee discussed possibly developing a grant to provide PTA funding to schools. The Committee will table this discussion for the March meeting to make a decision on how to move forward. EAC School Grants High Point, Parkdale, and Cherokee Lane have not submitted EAC grant applications to date. The Committee reviewed the following grant applications that were submitted: o Hollywood Elementary - $8,000 grant for S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) Initiative. Mr. Toledo motioned to approve Hollywood’s grant application. Second by Ms. Bernache. All members in favor; no opposed. Motion carries, 7-0-0. o University Park - $2,104.74 grant for Special Education to incorporate multimodal materials into addressing reading, math, language, and behavior goals. Ms. Miller motioned to approve University Park’s grant application. Second by Mr. Toledo. All members in favor; no opposed. Motion carries, 7-0-0. New Business The Maryland Initiative for Literacy and Equity The Prince George’s County school board voted to start this initiative at Hollywood Elementary School. Adjournment Mr. Bernache adjourned the meeting at 8:37 p.m.
