Minutes Education Advisory Committee (EAC) September 18, 2023 Virtual Meeting Attendees Members Present Absent Carolyn Bernache, Dist 4 X Vilay Senthep, Dist 1 X Susan Miller, Dist 2 X Dawn Powers, Dist 2 X Tessie Aikara, Dist 4 X Carson Peters, Dist 4 X Isaiah Warfield, Dist 2 X Geetha Rawat X Bianca Dacres X Daniel Levin X Also Present Kiaisha Barber, Staff Liaison Carleveva Thompson, Contract Secretary Call to Order Ms. Bernache called the meeting to order at 7:37 p.m. Old Business Approval of the August Meeting Minutes The Committee reviewed the meeting minutes from the August 21, 2023, meeting. Ms. Aikara motioned to approve the minutes as presented. Second by Mr. Warfield. All members in favor; no opposed. Motion carries, 5-0-0. Request for School Supplies from Cherokee Lane Tabled to next meeting. Update on The Every Child Project (TECP) No updates. Update on City Wide tutoring programs Ms. Barber provided an update that the contract is not finalized but has been reviewed by the City attorney. The interest form for the tutoring program is posted on the City’s webpage and 9 residents have submitted interest forms to date. The educational support staff position to oversee the tutoring program was posted. Three candidates were interviewed for the position and 1 candidate has been offered the position. College Park Day – October 7, 2023, 12:00 – 6:00 PM $5,000 is available in the budget to purchase books for College Park Day. Ms. Powers will order the books and it will take 2 weeks for them to be delivered. The Committee was asked if they will purchase books for Hispanic Heritage Month and the Committee agreed. Ms. Miller will send out a sign-up sheet for members to volunteer for time slots to help distribute books. New Business 2023 – 2024 EAC Grants The EAC grant applications were sent to the schools and the deadline is October 13, 2023. Presentation on Brief Strategic Family Therapy Ms. Barber invited the EAC to attend a workshop on Strategic Family Therapy, which is an evidence base model of engaging families to help with a wide range of problematic issues such as substance abuse, emotional disturbance, and behavior issues. There are three therapists currently being trained and will take about one year to implement. Ms. Gewat and Ms. Senthep attended the workshop in July. Ms. Gewat provided an update to the Committee that the program is for individuals in the age range of 6-18 years old and helps families develop skills to resolve issues in a cooperative and collaborative way. Kids Calendar Mr. Warfield presented to the Committee an idea of creating a kid’s calendar to help with promoting a marketing strategy for the EAC. The calendar would include dates of school open enrollment, EAC grants deadlines, and enrollment for summer programs. Ms. Bernache suggested Mr. Warfield draft a mock calendar for the Committee to review and vote on. Adjournment Ms. Bernache adjourned the meeting at 8:29 p.m.
