MINUTES Special Session of the College Park City Council Tuesday, February 21, 2017 Council Chambers 10:12 p.m. – 10:13 p.m. PRESENT: Mayor Wojahn; Councilmembers Kabir, Nagle, Brennan, Dennis, Stullich, Day, and Kujawa. ABSENT: Councilmember Cook. ALSO PRESENT: Scott Somers, City Manager; Bill Gardiner, Assistant City Manager; Janeen Miller, City Clerk; Suellen Ferguson, City Attorney; Terry Schum, Director of Planning; Jill Clements, Director of Human Resources; Chris Keosian, Student Liaison. During a regularly scheduled Worksession of the College Park City Council, a motion was made by Councilmember Stullich and seconded by Councilmember Nagle to enter into a Special Session to consider a time-sensitive matter of state legislation. The possibility of the Special Session was advertised on the Worksession agenda. The motion carried 7 – 0 – 0 and the Council entered into Special Session at 10:12 p.m. ACTION ITEM 17-G-35 Letter of support for SB 835 Maryland Law Enforcement and Government Trust Act A motion was made by Councilmember Day and seconded by Councilmember Kabir to draft a letter in support of SB 835, the Maryland Law Enforcement and Government Trust Act Mayor Wojahn said this was brought to his attention by representatives of CASA. The hearing is before our next regular meeting so action is needed tonight. This bill would limit the ability of local law enforcement to turn people over for immigration purposes. Immigrants in our community are concerned about issues of profiling and some students been scared to go to school. Our community is supportive of immigrants and even though we don’t have our own police force, it is important to ensure that our local police won’t be used for overly aggressive enforcement of immigration. There were no comments from the audience or from the Council. The motion passed 7 – 0 – 0. ADJOURN: A motion was made by Councilmember Brennan and seconded by Councilmember Dennis to exit the Special Session and with a vote of 7 – 0 – 0, Mayor Wojahn adjourned the Special Session at 10:13 p.m. ____________________________________________ Janeen S.
