Approved: 050714 Minutes Veterans Memorial Improvement Committee Wednesday, March 12, 2014 7:30 p.m. Council Chambers, City Hall Members Present Absent Deloris Cass ______ __X___ Joseph Ruth ___X__ ______ (arrived at 7:33 p.m.) Leonard Smith ______ __X___ Rita Zito ___X__ ______ Tom Davis ___X__ ______ Doris Davis ___X__ ______ Mary Cook ___X__ ______ Arthur Eaton ___X__ ______ Also Present: Bob Stumpff, Public Works Director; Julie Beavers, Recording Secretary The meeting was called to order at 7:30 p.m. 1. Election of Chair Mr. Davis motioned to elect Mrs. Davis as Chair. Ms. Cook seconded the motion. All were in favor. The motion passed 5-0-0 2. Review and Approval of the October 23 and December 11, 2013 minutes Mr. Davis motioned to approve the minutes of October 23, 2013 and December 11, 2013 as published. Ms. Cook seconded the motion. All were in favor. The motion passed 5-0-0 3. Review and Discussion of Veterans Day Program Publicity-Mary The signs were a success and can be reused for many years. Water- Tom The weather was nice and so the water was not as popular for the Memorial Day event. Some of the water was consumed. Gifts- Rita People seemed to like the bookmarks and there are plenty left for future events Luncheon- Tom The food was perfect and well attended. There were plenty of funds for the food. Photography- Arthur Mr. Eton sent the photographs of the event to Mr. Robinson. Old Flags- Bob and Tom Although only one flag was brought in for this event, the committee will continue this service for guests to use for future events. Public Works- Bob The Public Works Department reported no issues. Music and Program- Doris 121 people attended the event. The singers preformed beautifully and Mr. Duggan was a wonderful speaker. Mrs. Eton, a sign language interpreter, was a great asset to the program. 4. Old Business There is no business. 5. New Business Ivy Christoffers lives in Beltsville and would like to be a member of the VMIC and Yvette Allen reported that she is eligible. Mrs. Davis sent an application to Ms. Christoffers and gave one to Mr. Eton. He in turn will deliver it to his wife. Memorial Day Speaker: Brian Bertges Performance: Mrs. Davis explained that her neighbors are musicians and she has asked if either would be willing to sing the Star Spangled Banner. She is waiting to hear back from them. Ms. Cook found a Choral group to sing a patriotic song. Patrick will be home to do Taps. All this information will be confirmed before the next meeting. Plantings: The tulips were planted in October. The Wave Petunias were great the first year but the second year was not as nice. This year, Brenda Alexander suggested planting Celosia instead. Publicity: Ms. Cook will have the signs for Memorial Day. Flyers will be put up. She will ask Ms. Allen to have the event on the College Park Cable Channel and listed on the website. Ms. Cook will also ask Ms. Allen to put a notice in the Municipal Scene for more members and for the announcement of the event. Lastly, she will contact the regular newspapers. Pictures: Mr. Davis will make some easels that can display the pictures. Mr. Ruth suggested making a space for C clamps to hold the easels to the table. Water: Mr. Davis will purchase three packages of pony water bottles. Photography: Mr. Eton and Mr. Robinson will be the photographers. 2 03122014 Draft Minutes Luncheon: Mr. Davis motioned to not exceed $300.00 for the luncheon at the American Legion Hall. Mr. Ruth seconded the motion. All were in favor. The motion passed 6-0-0 Mr. Davis amended his motion to not exceed $350.00 for the luncheon at the American Legion Hall. Mr. Ruth seconded the motion. All were in favor. The motion passed 6-0-0 Veteran’s Day event at Memorial Chapel Brian Bertges would like to have a Veteran’s Day event at Memorial Chapel and would like to invite the guests at the College Park event to walk to Memorial Chapel. The Committee is concerned that their guests would not be able to walk to the Chapel. After some discussion, the Committee agreed the attendees for the UMD event could walk to the memorial or have a bus service from North College Park to Memorial Chapel. Another thought is to make an announcement after the closing ceremony and anyone who is interested could attend. Mrs. Davis will speak with Mr. Bertges. Alternative Speaker: Mr. Ruth will volunteer to have a speech ready in case the speaker does not show up. Ms. Christoffers will also have a speech ready as well. Invocation: Ms. Christoffers will give the Invocation. Benediction: Mr. Ruth will give the Benediction. 6. Next Meeting Date Wednesday, May 7th at 7:30p.m. 7. Adjournment Mr. Davis motioned to adjourn. Ms. Cook seconded the motion. All were in favor.
