CITY HALL, 1840 SECOND STREET COLUMBIA CITY, OR 97018 Present: Shannon Fitzgibbons, Chair Nell Harrison, Committee Member Jack Hruska, Committee Member Stan Hopkins, Committee Member Sheila Bauer, Committee Member Marian Calnon, Committee Member Leahnette Rivers, City Administrator/Recorder Sally Ann Marson, City Council Member Theodore (Ted) Burns, Citizen Monica Burns, Citizen Larry Preston, Citizen Joe Turner, Citizen Gunta Turner, Citizen Jason L. Jones, Jones Sculpture Studio Veterans Memorial Park: Monument: The Committee was pleased to meet Jason L. Jones of Jones Sculpture Studio, who will be constructing the monument. Jason spoke with Committee Members and visitors at length about a variety of design ideas for the monument. He passed around a sample of the black basalt that is quarried in Madras that will be used for the monument, and a book containing photos of existing veteran monuments from around the country. It was the general consensus that:  The monument honor all veterans that have served our country;  We avoid the use of shallow etching that might fade over time;  We consider situating the monument in such a way that it serves as a sun dial; PO Box 189  1840 Second Street  Columbia City, Oregon 97018 Phone 503-397-4010  Fax 503-366-2870 E-mail colcity@columbia-city.org  Web site www.columbia-city.org   We consider including a feature or features on the monument that would direct a ray of sunshine to a specific point on Memorial Day and/or Veteran’s Day;  We include an image of a veteran’s face or several faces to make the presentation more personal; and  We reserve the use of the six service seals for Phase II of the Veterans Park. The Committee will meet on site with Jason on Tuesday, June 18 at 11:30 a.m. Jason will bring a prototype of the monument, along with his clay, to help the Committee work through the various design and placement ideas. Quarry Tile Pavers: Members also looked at color samples for the Seneca quarry tiles. It was the general consensus that we use the three darker brick colors in the wall (unflashed brown, red and scarlet). Members agreed that we may also want to include a few black tile accents, or use concrete that is dyed black. The wall will be 3 to 4 feet in height with a sloped front to display the engraved tiles, and will be placed along the bank above the picnic area. A press release has been distributed, and brick order forms and flyers are now available for distribution. Ted and Monica distributed brick order forms and flyers during a recent Memorial Day event sponsored by the Columbia Chorale of Oregon. Sally Ann will deliver flyers and order forms to the Senior Center and other agencies in the area. Flag & Flag Pole: Leahnette said we will need a 4’ x 6’ POW-MIA flag for the site. She said the VFW may be able to get one for us. McBride Creek Trail System Project: Leahnette said the City has received another section of land for the trail system consisting of approximately 4 acres. She said the property was deeded to the City by Wayne and Judith Weigandt as part of the Canyon Creek Partition project. Entrance Sign Site: Leahnette reported that the lights have been screened with shrubbery and a picket fence, and the flag pole is installed. Dog Park: Leahnette said she recently received support from the Port Commissioners during a Port meeting for the dog park, the Conditional Use Application has been filed, and the Planning Commission will hold a public hearing on Tuesday, June 11 th at 7:00 p.m. The Parks Commission reviewed and discussed the proposed rules and proposed signage for the park.
