VETERANS PARK SITE NORTH END OF BIKE PATH, COLUMBIA CITY, OR 97018 Present: Shannon Fitzgibbons, Chair Nell Harrison, Committee Member Jack Hruska, Committee Member Stan Hopkins, Committee Member Larry Preston, Committee Member Monica Burns, Committee Member Theodore Burns, Committee Member Micah Rogers, Public Works Superintendent Leahnette Rivers, City Administrator/Recorder Colleen Menze, Citizen Jason L. Jones, Jones Sculpture Studio Veterans Memorial Park: Monument: Jason L. Jones of Jones Sculpture Studio, displayed a small clay prototype of the monument. Jason spoke with Committee Members and visitors at length about the monument placement and design. It was the consensus of the Committee that six different profile images, each depicting a veteran of a different branch of the service, be carved into the monument - three on each side. Jason will do what he can with each image to help indicate the branch of the service that it is meant to represent, such as a specific hat, helmet, goggles, etc. Jason will also carve the abbreviation for the service branch next to each image. Larry will perform the necessary calculations to determine the placement of the monument and the angle for the “spotlight” that will be needed in order to guide the ray of sunshine to the star or the series of stars on Memorial Day of any given year. Larry suggested the following quote by John L. The Public Works crew will spray the blackberries that are popping up along the east side of the monument, and bring in some additional fill dirt so the area can be developed into a more manageable and attractive grassy area that is easy to mow and will provide an attractive backdrop for the monument and flag. The crew will also remove the stump along the top of the bank above the picnic area. The crew is in the process of removing the three stumps along the fence in Phase II of the Veterans Park area. A chipper will be rented so the Corrections Crew can finish chipping up the woody debris that has accumulated. Members agreed that the wood chips make a great base for the picnic area. Members agreed that a split rail fence would be a nice addition along the top of the bank around the picnic area. Members also agreed that Oregon grape plantings along the top of the bank would be an attractive way to better stabilize the bank and make a natural barrier to help prevent falls. Leahnette will get a cost estimate for split rail fencing supplies. McBride Creek Trail System Project: Stan gave the Committee a tour of the rough-cut trail system leading down to the creek. The Columbia County Community Corrections Crew will be working on further trail development on Fridays. The Public Works crew will bring in a load of top soil to level out the trail system near the picnic area.
