7887 E. 60th Ave. Commerce City Commerce City, CO 80022 c3gov.com Meeting Minutes - Final Cultural Council Tuesday, May 21, 2024 6:00 PM Commerce City Civic Center, 7887 E. 60th Ave., Commerce City, CO 80022, Rm 3109 1. Call To Order/Roll Call - 6pm Meeting was called to order at 6:08pm by Chair Jen Martin. In attendance: Jen Martin, Jackie Riggs-Gonzales, Ronna Sanchez, August Jonhart, Jan Cruz, Nick Gonzalez, Tyler Vitello, Omar Lozano, Cynthia Montes, and Councilmember Kristi Douglas Absent: Councilmember Susan Noble, Members Kelly Reyos, Linda Barr, Jade Humphries 2. Community Time - Welcome Jade! Group went around the circle sharing their "weather report" 3. Approval of Minutes Min 24-080 Ronna motioned to approve the minutes from the April meeting. Tyler seconded the motion, which was approved unanimously. 4. Public Comment None 5. Subcommittee Reports A. Music in the Park Group expressed interest in wanting to have a representative from Cultural Council at the Summer Shindig planning meetings. Ronna will send a volunteer sign up for Music in the Park to board members. Both Omar and Nick identified as bilingual and comfortable doing opening announcements on stage. They can also translate the script if needed. Councilmember Douglas expressed the need to introduce Cultural Council and City Council members on stage at those events. Ronna approved the motion for $3,200 to go towards offering free food vouchers. Jan seconded the motion, which was approved unanimously. ii. Feather Banner Approval Jan Cruz approved the motion to spend up to $300 on a 14' feather banner. Tyler seconded the motion, which was approved unanimously. iii. Table Budget (swag, wheel prizes, etc) Staff will connect with Ronna on sound and swag budget and gift cards for the raffle. Staff will share swag options with committee for them to rank. Group expressed not wanting to get throw away items, but instead invest in something that will promote art around the city (bags, magnets, prints, stickers, etc) Group discussed inviting city boards & commissions and internal departments to participate in all Music in the Park events (not just Summer Shindig) B. Art Exhibitions i. Submission Review Artist follow ups: Quartus submitting art or photography of art? Make sure we have releases, especially for minors in photographs. If above stipulations are met, the group decided to accept all submissions. Staff will reach out to all artists to have them choose a max of two pieces each. Artists can print and frame their piece to deliver, or staff can print if they'd prefer. The group briefly discussed wanting any purchasing requests to go through the artist, but for it to not be part of the display. Art show is June 4th at 5:30pm at Eagle Pointe Rec Center. All are invited. Bison Ridge artwork will be taken for install the following day. Staff will share all marketing for this event and summer events at the art show. Councilmember Douglas recommended a representative from Cultural Council come to promote summer events at the June 3rd City Council meeting. C. Public Art Councilmember Douglas departed the meeting i. Public Art Call Delay & Summer Meetings Jen motioned to have virtual meetings in June and July and no August meeting. Public Art Maintenance (Cockelbur & Underpass Mural) 72nd & Quebec Underpass Mural: Ronna motioned to set a regular maintenance schedule with the artist for one year and then reevaluate, Jan seconded the motion, which was approved unanimously. Cocklebur: Jan motioned to do a public art call for a new piece of art that honors Cocklebur that differs from the original statue design, Jackie seconded the motion, which was approved unanimously. The public art call timeline will happen after current public art installations are complete. 6. Monthly Updates A. Grants & Finance Ronna presented B. Collaboration & Outreach C. Volunteer Hours Nick and Jackie attended the Rusty the Rabbit celebration. Jan and Tyler reported hours for the public art subcommittee work. D. Recruitment & Engagement i. Event Calendar The group briefly discussed other events like Adams County PRIDE, Senior Resource Fair, and Juneteenth. No interest was expressed for tabling any of the above events beyond simply attending. 7. New Business A. Hispanic Heritage Committee Creation Staff will follow up with Omar with next steps as the Cultural Council representative. 8. Old Business A. Polos & Nametags Pushed to the next meeting Commerce City Page 3 Cultural Council Meeting Minutes - Final May 21, 2024 B. Memorial Day Parade Budget Group discussed Memorial Day involvement.
