PRESENTATIONS AND PROTOCOL DOCUMENTS A.-1. 17-6169 Presentation of a Proclamation declaring June 13, 2017 as "Craig Curry Day" in Coral Gables. [Note for the Record: Following Mayor Valdes-Fauli’s reading of the title to Agenda Item 1 (i.e. Presentation of a Proclamation declaring June 13, 2017 as "Craig Curry Day" in Coral Gables), Mayor Valdez-Fauli stated we are very proud of Greg Curry and what he has done for Coral Gables. Mayor Valdez-Fauli read the Proclamation. Mr. Curry thanked the City of Coral Gables for proclaiming June 13, 2017 as Craig Curry Day. Mr. Curry stated that he wanted talk about 1965 and beyond where he got his foundation in Coconut Grove, where he learned to play football and where he wanted to emulated the bigger guys on the George Washington Carver High School Football Team. Mr. Curry stated he had the opportunity to attend Coral Gables High School in 1965, where his skills were sharpened, where he was coached by a dynamic and award winning coach, namely Coach Nick Kotys, where we were on a bigger stage playing games in stadiums seating 40,000 and we were frequently outnumbering the games that were played at the University of Miami. Mr. Curry stated from there he went to the University of Minnesota where he played and matured, but unfortunately he was unable to play his first year as a freshman, because of academic shortcomings, but he added that was the best thing to happen to him, as he learned how to study and learned and matured as a human being and academician and obtained his degree in Psychology, and a Master’s in Athletic Administration. Mr. Curry stated he had an opportunity to play for the Miami Dolphins being drafted by the Dolphins in 1972; the year they went undefeated, and added humorously that otherwise he would have had a different kind of ring on his finger. Mr. Curry stated through all of that, the most important thing right now is the youth who he is working with in South Florida and the rest of the country in making sure that no one is slipping through the cracks and the many who want to can succeed, and he has put together a consulting company that helps students, mostly student athletes to get into college and to make sure that they can live their dreams even when their playing days are over. Mr. Curry thanked the City of Coral Gables, all of his friends and everyone that have come out to witness this, and said humorously that 50 years does not seem all that long ago, but sometimes in the morning when he wakes up, he can tell it’s been 50 years. Mayor Valdez-Fauli presented the Proclamation to Mr. Curry and thanked him for everything he has done for our City and said it is wonderful to have these types of presentations and get the opportunity to meet very fine people]. [Note for the Record: Following Mayor Valdes-Fauli’s reading of the title to Agenda Item 2 (i.e. The City of Coral Gables, in concert with the Coral Gables Community Foundation, honor Café Demetrio and Maroosh with the Coral Cube Award, as enduring Coral Gables restaurants which have become landmarks in their own respect), Economic Development Director Javier Betancourt introduced the Coral Cube Award Winners and Mayor Valdez-Fauli and Mary Snow of the Community Foundation, presented the Coral Cube Award to representatives of Café Demetrio and Maroosh. The Coral Cube Award was presented to Café Demetrio, who was represented by owner Demetrio Pina, which was opened in 1997 in their beautiful and historic 1926 building on the corner of Salzedo and Alhambra, and any time you visit the Café it is filled with the “Who’s Who” of Coral Gables. Economic Development Director Betancourt thanked Café Demetrio for their 20 years in Coral Gables saying they are celebrating their 20th anniversary in the City, having opened the restaurant in 1997. The Coral Cube Award was presented to Maroosh Mediterranean Restaurant, who was represented by owner Luis Correia, which is celebrating 25 years in Coral Gables and is famous for their belly dancers, lamb dishes and was voted as having the Best Baba Ghanoush in Miami. Economic Development Director Betancourt thanked Maroosh for their contributions to Coral Gables and congratulated them for their award]. Kleiman, Management & Budget Director, recipient of the Government Finance Officers Association’s Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for Fiscal Year 2016-2017. Commissioner Lago stated It’s always a pleasure when our City can present our Finance Department this prestigious award, and he would like to invite Keith Kleiman and Diana Gomez to come up and the rest of the Finance Department; noting that City of Coral Gables Page 3 City Commission Meeting Minutes June 13, 2017 these individuals do an incredible job working on behalf of the City, and its residents, they do their job with pride and we are in today’s financial situation, which is one of the most positive in the State of Florida as a result of the efforts of these individuals. Commissioner Lago further stated on behalf of his colleagues and the residents of Coral Gables, it is his pleasure to present the Government Finance Officers Association’s 2016 Distinguished Budget Presentation Award to Keith Kleiman, Assistant Finance Director for Management and Budget. Commissioner Lago noted that this is the 27th year the City has received this award, which is the highest form of recognition for governmental budgeting in the United States. Commissioner Lago added that the award is confirmation that our Budget Division adheres to nationally recognized guidelines, while providing a vital financial plan to ensure financial transparency and accountability. Commissioner Lago stated with an annual Operating Budget of almost $170 million and a 5 year Capital Budget of approximately $200 million, careful budgeting is essential to ensure the proper and efficient use of our most important sources of income - the Coral Gables taxpayer. Commissioner Lago stated he would like to congratulate Keith and his dedicated staff for his hard work and all of the excellent results we have had with our Triple A Bond Rating, the highest reserves in our City’s history, 5 straight years of lowering millage rates; and further stated that these individuals deserve a lot of recognition, because they have shored up a City that was in financial trouble, and they have done an incredible job]. Firefighter Arteaga was also recognized for excellence in the area of physical fitness, and for his effectiveness coaching Class 16-02 toward greater job success and future achievement. His work with the recruits involved stress management, as well as dealing with the physical job requirements faced by firefighters on a daily basis. As a result of Firefighter Arteaga’s hard work and dedication, Recruit Class 16-02 will be better prepared both physically and mentally for their task ahead]. Interim Human Resources Director Green stated that we are pleased to recognize Carlos Gutierrez of the Parking Department as the “Employee of the Month” for April, because of his compassion and great leadership skills. Interim Human Resources Director Green stated that Parking Enforcement Supervisor Gutierrez has been employed by the City for 11½ years and currently holds the position of Parking Enforcement Supervisor. Interim Human Resources Director Green further stated that In addition to his dedication on his job, he has earned the respect and admiration of his subordinates who see him as a role model and as a compassionate supervisor, he is known for his high standards, work ethic, and his keen sense of fairness and it is for these reasons, Mr. Carlos Gutierrez was chosen as the April 2017 “Employee of the Month”. Interim Human Resources Director Green asked everyone to watch the “Employee of the Month” video. Parking Director Kevin Kinney said that he would like to say one of things that he likes most about Carlos is that he brings peace and calm to parking enforcement that is not usually associated with that job, which helps me out tremendously. Interim Human Resources Director Green stated that Plans Coordinator Assistant Bermudez handles the front desk permit intake of the Building Division with poise and professionalism and is recognized by his co-workers as hardworking, pleasant, and conscientious; and is by his supervisors recognized as always punctual, incredibly reliable, and a super team player. Interim Human Resources Director Green further stated that he follows through to the end whether it is to track down a permit, leading the customer to historical records, or to simply filling out the necessary permit application with confidence, assurance and a smile to customers who might be intimidated by the permitting process. Interim Human Resources Director Green added that the City instituted a policy to close out longstanding open permits and Ernie has handled these numerous permits, assuring property owners and contractors that he will assist them, which has resulted in him receiving a number of commendations for his work. Interim Human Resources Director Green stated that Ernie started with the City in 2002, and joined the Building Division in 2012 as a part-time Plans Coordinator Assistant, and when a full-time position opened up in 2014, he was promoted to a full-time position of Plans Coordinator Assistant as a result of his deep knowledge of our permitting and inspection process and his excellent customer service attitude that exemplifies the City of Coral Gables. Interim Human Resources Director Green said that the nomination for this award stated that the Building Division has high hopes for Ernie, and they encourage him to continue his studies in Project Management and that the future is bright for this young professional. Interim Human Resources Director Green said let’s join in congratulating Plans Coordinator Assistant Bermudez on his selection as the “Employee of the Month” for June 2017, and asked everyone to watch the video. City of Coral Gables Page 6 City Commission Meeting Minutes June 13, 2017 Interim Development Services Director Charles Wu stated that Ernie had worked Part-Time for the Development Services Department for 10 years and he left to take a position with an architectural firm, our department knew he was the right person to bring back after we had a full time position available, and we are glad to have him back on a second tour of duty. Interim Development Services Director Charles Wu said that Ernie has gone back to school and sees a bright future for this young professional and that he has never had a bad day he smiles all day long. Interim Development Services Director Charles Wu congratulated Plans Coordinator Assistant Bermudez adding that this recognition is a well-deserved honor. Plans Coordinator Assistant Bermudez thanked everyone from the selection process and Mr. Wu and his supervisors, who instill confidence in me every day, his family and friends who without them he would not be the person his am today, and the people whom he works with day and day out they are ones that back him up and support him and make him look good].
