PRESENTATIONS AND PROTOCOL DOCUMENTS A.-1. 18-7149 Presentation of a Proclamation proclaiming March 27, 2018 as "Reading Day" in Coral Gables. [Note for the Record: Following Mayor Valdes-Fauli’s reading of the title to Agenda Item 1 (i.e. Presentation of a Proclamation proclaiming March 27, 2018 as "Reading Day" in Coral Gables), Mayor Valdez-Fauli assisted by Jessie Cathers and Grant Keller, who are the children of City employees, read the proclamation. The Proclamation proclaiming “Reading Day” is a result of a project by Leadership Miami through the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce in conjunction with the Miami-Dade Family Learning Partnership, to raise awareness of the City, the Partnership and their respective emphasis on local children and the importance of literacy for young children in Miami-Dade County. Leadership Miami is a group of approximately 100 professionals in Miami, who are identified as rising leaders in their different industries. The Family Learning Partnership works closely with families and their children providing free books (English, Spanish or Creole) to children through their book club, providing free books at pediatricians’ offices, holding parenting classes, and educating at-risk youth on various legal issues through their Legal Up program.] This Presentation/Protocol Document was Presented and Filed City Clerk Item No. 1 A.-2. 18-7207 Presentation of a Proclamation proclaiming April 8, 2018 through April 14, 2018 as "National Library Week" in Coral Gables. [Note for the Record: Following Mayor Valdes-Fauli’s reading of the title to Agenda Item 2 (i.e. Presentation of a Proclamation proclaiming April 8, 2018 through April 14, 2018 as "National Library Week" in Coral Gables), Vice Mayor Keon read the Proclamation. Vice Mayor Keon stated she would like to introduce all of you to our Director of Libraries for Miami-Dade County, Ray Baker, further stating about a year-and-a half ago, she met with County Commissioner, Xavier Suarez, to assess the need for the renovation of our library and he set up a meeting for us and City staff with Ray Baker, who has never stopped working with us. Vice Mayor Keon stated they have designed the major renovation, that will be done in two phases, a picture and renderings for the first phase of the renovation of the library are set up in the library, and there is a website that any resident of the City can comment on those renovations, City of Coral Gables Page 2 City Commission Meeting Minutes March 27, 2018 which is all due to a $1,000,000 allocation from Miami-Dade County for this library. Vice Mayor Keon stated we hope to finish the first phase of the renovation, so were ready for the 2nd million dollars to complete the renovation of our library, and it is a beautiful library and it is well used and we are very grateful to the County, to Ray Baker, and to Commissioner Suarez for all their work in helping us achieve this renovation of our library. Library Director Baker thanked the Mayor and Vice Mayor for recognizing us for "National Library Week," further stating that the Miami-Dade Public Library has been serving the residents of Coral Gables for almost 50 years, so this is a great partnership between the County and the City of Coral Gables, and we are really excited about the prospect of doing this renovation of the existing branch. Library Director Baker stated more importantly for "National Library Week," he brought with him your outstanding Branch Manager, Will Runyon, who with his staff have been serving your residents for many years, providing face to face services every single day of the week, and he appreciates all the work that he and his staff do, otherwise he would not be standing up here. Library Director Baker introduced Assistant Director Sue Cvejanovich, stating humorously that Sue has the fun of being in charge of all 50 branches and is in charge of all our librarians throughout the system, and that she has a pretty easy job. Library Director Baker thanked the Commission for having us here, stating that we are really honored, and that the library here is the number 2 checkout in terms of usage in libraries throughout the system as the residents of the City of Coral Gables are voracious readers, and we encourage reading in all its forms.
