Slesnick Board Member Mary Snow Board Member Sharon Watson School Community Relations Meeting Minutes December 18, 2020 Committee The School Community Relations Committee will be holding a discussion workshop on Friday, December 18, 2020 VIRTUALLY, commencing 8:30 a.m., where in all interested persons may be heard via Zoom platform used by the City for live remote comments. Members of the public may join the meeting via Zoom at (https://zoom.us/j/98181327770). In addition, a dedicated phone line will be available so that any individual who does not wish (or is unable) to use Zoom may listen to and participate in the meeting by dialing: (929) 205-6099 Meeting ID: 981 8132 7770. PUBLIC HEARING Estelle Lockhart - Formally thanks committee on behalf of the G.W. Carver Elementary PTA for their opposition to the Wawa Development item. Francys Vellecillo - Representing School Board Member Rojas in the meeting. B. NEW BUSINESS B-1 2021 School Community Relations Committee Meeting Dates (Facilitated by Solanch Lopez, Secretary & Naomi Levi Garcia, Staff Liaison) Brief discussion is had, and the third Friday of every month is retained as the regular meeting schedule. This item will be brought back at the January meeting to give those members that were not in attendance an opportunity to provide feedback. B-2 Introduction of Principal of Coral Gables Senior High School Coral Gables Senior High School Principal Tony Ullivarri is introduced and provides brief update on school items. - Teachers have been able to adapt and establish safety security, distancing in classrooms. - 20% or around 600 students are physically in school. The administration is strongly encouraging students who are not doing well online to come back into the building. - A large majority of teachers are teaching duel modality, both in class and online. Teachers were set up with all equipment needed. Monitor, microphones, etc. Additional monitors to share screens on Zoom and others to share with students in classrooms. B-3 Update on Coral Gables Senior High School Construction (Facilitated by Iraida Mendez-Cartaya) Presentation by Victor Alonso. - New construction phase to be completed by January - February 2021. - Courtyard area should be completed by Spring 2021. - An additional $11 Million was approved by the School Board for the replacement of the gymnasium. Construction should begin 2023-2024. Attachments: Coral Gables Senior High School Renovation Pictures.docx B-4 Update on nurses at Coral Gables schools (Facilitated by Iraida Mendez-Cartaya) City of Coral Gables Page 2 School Community Relations Meeting Minutes December 18, 2020 Committee - City of Coral Gables provided EMT support to the schools from October 6 through November 4. - All schools within the City with the exception of G.W. Carver Elementary are currently staffed with a health care professional. - This can fluctuate on a daily basis due to the high demand for health care workers at this time. B-5 Update on the numbers of students who have contracted COVID-19 at Coral Gables schools & upcoming vaccination requirements (Facilitated by Iraida Mendez-Cartaya) - Up to date information on confirmed cases can be found at www.reopening.dadeschools.net COVID-19 Dashboard. - Vaccinations – No plan on requiring vaccination on staff or students. No plans or discussion on mandating unless it’s from state or national. At this point there are no vaccinations available for students. - Protocols are in place to prevent COVID-19 spread in schools. - Expectation is that people will still need to wear masks beginning 2021-2022 based on news and research. - Continue to partner with medical professions in the community and county. - In discussion with state of Florida to provide additional accommodations for testing. B-6 Presentation by Charlotte Cassel, Director of Strategic Partnerships, Health Information Project (HIP) (Facilitated by Board Member Snow) Presentation will be heard at the next SCRC meeting. Speaker was not able to attend. C. OLD BUSINESS C-1 SIP Committee Member Assignments Review (Facilitated by Ariel Fernandez, Chair) Item will be discussed at the next in-person SCRC meeting to ensure proper discussion by all committee members. ONGOING BUSINESS General Updates (Facilitated by Solanch Lopez, Secretary & Naomi Levi Garcia, Staff Liaison) - Update on recently passed resolutions. - City will not be hosting a Teacher of the Year Award ceremony this year. Will look into a proclamation recognition at a future Commission Meeting and report back to Committee. - Summer Family Literacy Festival update will be provided to the Commission at the January 12, 2021 Commission Meeting. - A discussion item will be added to the January agenda on the School Districts 2021 Legislative Priorities. PUBLIC HEARING The School Community Relations Committee provides an opportunity for dialogue and collaboration between schools and their neighbors, including the City of Coral Gables . The Committee looks for opportunities to improve schools in terms of physical appearance, community involvement, and quality of education. The Committee will also provide oversight of the City’s educational landscape; making sure the City is fulfilling its recent education commitments and assuring that the needs of students and families are being adequately served by the public-school system. Finally, the Committee is intended to serve as a review committee for the Education Compact between the City and Miami Dade Public Schools. Public Comments shall be limited to two minutes per speaker. A ten second reminder will be provided to the speaker upon the closing of their time. B. ANNOUNCEMENTS Next SCRC Meeting - Friday, January 15, 2021 Questions/Comments: scrc@coralgables.com ADJOURNMENT NOTE Any person who acts as a lobbyist pursuant to the City of Coral Gables Ordinance No . 2006-11, must register with the City Clerk, prior to engaging in lobbying activities before city staff, boards, committees and/or the City Commission. A copy of the Ordinance is available in the Office of the City Clerk, City Hall. Any person, or persons, wishing to appeal any decision made by the City Commission with respect to any matter considered at this meeting or hearing, will require a verbatim record of the proceeding upon which the appeal is based. Interested persons should, therefore, take the necessary steps to ensure that a verbatim record of the proceedings is made which contains the testimony and evidence upon which the appeal is based. Any person making impertinent or slanderous remarks or who become boisterous while addressing the Commission, shall be barred from further audience before the Commission by the Chair, unless permission to continue or again address the Commission is granted by the majority vote of the Commission Members present . Clapping, applauding, heckling or verbal outbursts or any remarks in support or opposition to a speaker shall be prohibited. Signs or placards shall not be permitted in Commission Chambers.
