Slesnick Board Member Mary Snow Board Member Sharon Watson School Community Relations Meeting Minutes April 16, 2021 Committee The School Community Relations Committee will be holding a discussion workshop on Friday, April 16, 2021 VIRTUALLY, commencing 8:30 a.m., where in all interested persons may be heard via Zoom platform used by the City for live remote comments. Members of the public may join the meeting via Zoom at (https://us06web.zoom.us/j/82343379165). In addition, a dedicated phone line will be available so that any individual who does not wish (or is unable) to use Zoom may listen to and participate in the meeting by dialing: (929) 205-6099 Meeting ID: 823 4337 9165. PUBLIC HEARING B. NEW BUSINESS B-1 Miami-Dade County Public Schools Update (Facilitated by Mari Tere Rojas, School Board Member) •Due to progress within the community, School board is revisiting quarantine policies for students and staff. Looking at updating quarantine period from 14 days to 10 days. •Robust summer program being looked at to help with learning loss caused by COVID. Saturday school also available. •The hope is that next school year will offer 100% return to in-person. Parents also can have students attend Miami-Dade Online Academy. •2021 graduations featuring hybrid option – Graduations will take place from June 1 through June 9 (Guest limit -2) •They are developing strategies to address the achievement gap. •Board items: Wawa crosswalk brought up •Staffing for next year looked at during last board meeting. C. ONGOING BUSINESS C-1 Update on the Gables Literacy Festival (Facilitated by Sam Joseph, Vice Chair) •Name change, vendor applications will be ready next week along with marketing materials •Event date: Saturday, May 29 at Youth Center; City closing Riviera Drive. C-2 General Updates (Facilitated by Naomi Levi Garcia, Staff Liaison & Solanch Lopez, Secretary) •Update on Ponce Middle School sidewalk request; the City can construct the sidewalk along Augusto Street however the City is unable to construct on/across Maynada Street because it is County owned; A crosswalk on Maynada Street will only be approved in a complete stop control intersection. •The City of Coral Gables has reached out to the County to consider a solution that will result in a roadway configuration that provides full stop control to protect crossing pedestrians at Maynada Street •City staff is fully supportive of this initiative and exploring the concept of “Youth Zones” in order to facilitate the construction of safety features in and around areas with a concentration of children. •Initial update on schools listed on City website. PUBLIC HEARING The School Community Relations Committee provides an opportunity for dialogue and collaboration between schools and their neighbors, including the City of Coral Gables . The committee looks for opportunities to improve schools in terms of physical appearance, community involvement, and quality of education. The Committee will also provide oversight of the City’s educational landscape; making sure the City is fulfilling its recent education commitments and assuring that the needs of students and families are being adequately served by the public-school system. Finally, the Committee is intended to serve as a review committee for the Education Compact between the City and Miami Dade Public Schools. Public Comments shall be limited to two minutes per speaker. A ten second reminder will be provided to the speaker upon the closing of their time. B. A copy of the Ordinance is available in the Office of the City Clerk, City Hall. Any person, or persons, wishing to appeal any decision made by the City Commission with respect to any matter considered at this meeting or hearing, will require a verbatim record of the proceeding upon which the appeal is based. Interested persons should, therefore, take the necessary steps to ensure that a verbatim record of the proceedings is made which contains the testimony and evidence upon which the appeal is based. Any person making impertinent or slanderous remarks or who become boisterous while addressing the Commission, shall be barred from further audience before the Commission by the Chair, unless permission to continue or again address the Commission is granted by the majority vote of the Commission Members present . Clapping, applauding, heckling or verbal outbursts or any remarks in support or opposition to a speaker shall be prohibited. Signs or placards shall not be permitted in Commission Chambers.
