Coralville Parks and Recreation Commission Meeting Minutes April 18, 2016 Call to Order Commission Chairperson Fred Fevold called the meeting to order at 6:04 p.m. Present were Commission Members Marti Mount, Eve Casserly, and David Thayer and Parks and Recreation Director, Sherri Proud. Alex Taylor joined the group at the Altmeier Farm. Citizen Comments none Approval of Minutes Commission Member Thayer made the motion to approve the meeting minutes from March 21, 2016 with recommended edits for a run on sentence. Commission Member Casserly seconded the motion; unanimous approval. Tour of Altmaier Farm Guests at the Altmaier Farm: Jeff Harper, 2656 Glen Hollow Ct, Coralville. Ryan Jerred, 1132 Franklin Street, Iowa City. Andy and Diane Hamer, 1140 Weeber Street, Iowa City. Jackson Gilmore, 29 Riverview Drive, Iowa City. All guests are a part of a local disc golf community and have helped review Harper’s design for the property. Commission traveled to the Altmaier Farm on Deer Creek Road. This is property that has been purchased on a ten year contract and will be turned over to the City in January of 2017. Staff have been brainstorming ideas for the property and have walked it several times. A disc golf course is one of the facilities that is on the desired list of facilities for Coralville. This property has both open space area areas and wooded as well as flat and elevation areas. Staff has been working with Jeff Harper, local disc golf course designer to draft a course design. The Commission walked the course design and discussed the advantages and challenges of the site. Advantages are the layout lends well for the course. There is room to also work with a possible archery range and bocci ball or other natural surface court games which could fit around the barn area, room for parking, and barns and outbuildings that can serve as shelters and gathering spaces. Disadvantages include cost to bring water and sewer to the site, distance from other parks, potential flood areas for holes 1 – 3, and dust created by quarry. Council Report None. Director’s Report Parks and Recreation Director Proud reported on the hiring process for the Park Superintendent position, progress and completion of the Youth Sports Park project. Three upcoming word days with the junior highs will focus on both planting trees and removing invasive species. Commission Comments Commission Member Fred Fevold No additional comments.
