Tour of Altmaier Farm
Guests at the Altmaier Farm: Jeff Harper, 2656 Glen Hollow Ct, Coralville. Ryan Jerred, 1132 Franklin
Street, Iowa City. Andy and Diane Hamer, 1140 Weeber Street, Iowa City. Jackson Gilmore, 29
Riverview Drive, Iowa City. All guests are a part of a local disc golf community and have helped review
Harper’s design for the property.
Commission traveled to the Altmaier Farm on Deer Creek Road. This is property that has been
purchased on a ten year contract and will be turned over to the City in January of 2017. Staff have been
brainstorming ideas for the property and have walked it several times. A disc golf course is one of the
facilities that is on the desired list of facilities for Coralville. This property has both open space area
areas and wooded as well as flat and elevation areas. Staff has been working with Jeff Harper, local disc
golf course designer to draft a course design. The Commission walked the course design and discussed
the advantages and challenges of the site. Advantages are the layout lends well for the course. There is
room to also work with a possible archery range and bocci ball or other natural surface court games which
could fit around the barn area, room for parking, and barns and outbuildings that can serve as shelters
and gathering spaces. Disadvantages include cost to bring water and sewer to the site, distance from
other parks, potential flood areas for holes 1 – 3, and dust created by quarry.
Council Report None.
Director’s Report Parks and Recreation Director Proud reported on the hiring process for the Park
Superintendent position, progress and completion of the Youth Sports Park project. Three upcoming word
days with the junior highs will focus on both planting trees and removing invasive species.
