Coralville Parks and Recreation Commission Meeting Minutes September 16, 2019 Call to Order Commission Chairperson Fred Fevold called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. at the Coralville Recreation Center. Present were Commission Members Marti Mount, Eve Casserly, Kyle McEvilly, Alex Taylor, Council Member Jill Dodds, and Director Sherri Proud. Citizen Comments No comments Approval of Minutes Commission Member Taylor made the motion to approve the meeting minutes from July 15, 2019 with corrections as submitted. Commission Member McEvilly seconded the motion; unanimous approval. Presentation of Annual Report Proud presented the 2018 Annual Report. During 2018, the City constructed and opened Altmaier Family Park and Disc Golf Course with the help of the Iowa River Disc Golf Association and other volunteers. The park was opened with a celebration on September 30, 2018 with a crowd of over 200 people including the Altmaier family and friends. The park is open 11:00 a.m. to dusk on weekdays and dawn to dusk on weekends. Brown Deer Golf Club completed several projects as course improvements: rock rip rap around 70% of main lake, replaced trees in west median of parking lot, and repaired cart paths on holes 6 and 9. Golf Pro McCarty played in the PGA Championship and was inducted into the Iowa Golf Hall of Fame. 5th Street Social celebrated the near end of summer had about 2700 people in attendance which was up 1100 people than the year before. The event was expanded to 12th Avenue, taking up six blocks with activities. New activities included a car show and shine, ice cream social at the Coralville Food Pantry, and a 2nd stage featuring two solo artists. Staff created a new Halloween event called Fright Fest that was held at Altmaier Family Park. Young Footliters provided fun, slightly spooky features along the Haunted Walk and staff created an awesome experience through the haunted barn. Other great special events included events for Playvolution, May the 4th Be With You Stars Wars event, and Kids Nights and Sweet Corn Feed at the Farmers’ Market. A new playground was installed at Coralville Creekside Ballpark. It is the first playground in the City to have a rubberized accessible surface. The Coralville Center for the Performing Arts had 25,690 people attend events at the theater. With event dates and rehearsals, the theater was occupied 259 days of the year. 3,089 people performed on the stage. Generous donations allowed the theater to upgrade microphones and to move the costume shop to a heated and airconditioned space. During 2018, a half time recreation coordinator was added to program for the 55 and older community. Technology classes, trips, craft sharing, and programs about the community all proved popular. Naming of New Public Space at end of 3rd Avenue Proud brought forth the idea of naming the small two acre public space at the end of 3rd Avenue donated to the City by the Watts Group. The Commission decided to include the nearby condominium community in naming the space. Staff are working to improve the grass and will be adding a small shelter, grill, and porch swing feature to the space. Staff will pursue a name during 2020 with the neighborhood. Council Report: Council Member Dodds reported that Council recently took a bus tour of the current projects and new developments. The Arena is really progressing quickly and taking shape. Playvolution will be held September 10 – 28. The committee will be visiting all the council meetings in the metro and reminding people to take time to play, no matter at what age. Mayor Lundell proclaimed Coralville as renamed to “Playville” for the duration of the program. Director Report: Parks and Recreation Director Proud shared that Woodpecker Singletrack Trail Open House and Try It night will be held September 19 from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Scheels will be bringing fat tire or mountain bikes for people to use who don’t have bicycles. Ribbon cutting and short remarks planned for 5:15 p.m. The award for bringing down Phase I of Hawkeye Ready Mix site has been made to Freeman Construction and will begin in the next week or two. The Oak Hill Cemetery Sign will go to bid in October and may still be built this fall. Brown Deer has had an average summer and staff Is hoping for great fall weather. Proud and Buhmeyer will be attending the National Recreation and Park Association Conference in Baltimore, Maryland from September 22 – 26. Dodds explained the current sign ordinance and said that Council will be reviewing the sign ordinance soon.
