CITY OF CORTLAND LANDSCAPE AND DESIGN COMMISSION MINUTES – September 10, 2015 Mayor’s Conference Room at 4:00 p.m. Members Present: Mike Dexter (Chair), Jeff Davidson, Theresa Quail, Paul Paradine, Steve Broyles, Diane Batzing Approve the August 13, 2015 Minutes: Comm. Broyles, 1st; Comm. Quail, 2nd 2016 Tree Program Planning Tree species for the May planting was finalized. Five underwire species and four tall trees were selected. Comm. Batzing will send the list to Schichtel’s Nursery Recent Tree Concerns/Notes • The Waterworks spruce tree has been removed. We will be seeking a 15’-20’ cut evergreen to be lighted for the 2015 holidays until a permanent tree is planted for the future. Comm. Paradine has a colleague who grows evergreens. • Comms. Dexter and Batzing checked on each newly planted DEC grant tree during this summer’s extended drought period. Two have died. Several calls were made to remind recipients whose trees appeared stressed, to provide water. • Two elm trees at Courthouse Park have died. One has been removed. They may have been planted too deeply. • Some trees will be removed at the Wickwire Pool area during demolition procedures. Other • Comm. Dexter is collecting City expenses and other information for our Tree City USA application. • Comm. Batzing reported that in a phone conversation with Debra Gorka (DEC), a Round 13 application will be coming. To qualify for funding, a different section of the City will need to be identified as an underserved area. For 2015 and 2016 the city’s East End neighborhood is receiving 75% of grant-funded trees. • Comm. Dexter spoke to Mayor Tobin regarding possible City funding should we receive no grant funding for trees in 2017.
