May 2019 Tree Planting Program Updates:
• Contento’s on Pendleton St. has withdrawn their tree application, siting visual obstruction and
pedestrian safety as their trucks turn into the parking lot.
• We have met the required 50% DEC grant quota for planting trees in flooding and brownfield
sites.
• Comm. Batzing will tag the trees at Schichtel’s Nursery in Springville on October 17th.
• Two residents’ applications have been place on our waiting list.
Recent Tree Concerns/Notes
• Jim Maloney and Comm. Dexter have trimmed trees at various locations around the City.
• Comm. Dexter will notify Nic Dovi of additional trees requiring removal.
• A ginkgo on Floral Ave. has fruited, indication that it is a female that produces a noxious smell;
we will replace it in May.
• Carter Tree Service has removed five spruce trees on the Church St. median, but six others
remain where concolor firs are planned for planting in May (total of 15 trees between Port
Watson St. and Randall St.).
Other:
• Comm. Dexter and Batzing will attend the local DEC workshop about the Chesapeake Bay
Watershed tree planting project we will participate in, in 2020, by planting 25 trees in Cortland.
• Carter Tree Service removed three trees or stumps so we were able to plant trees held since
May at the Waterworks.
• Comm. Paradine indicates NYSEG will plant four trees for our DEC project as an Arbor Day
project, to supplement our DEC grant project.
• Jim Maloney suggests the LDC apply for a tree trimming grant through the next DEC Urban
and Community Forest grant opportunity.
• The LDC discussed some Arbor Day possibilities for 2019: The NYSEG project on Pendleton
St. at Cortland Schools; another Barry School planting; a Cortland H.S. memorial tree as
suggested by their building and grounds director.
Respectfully submitted,
Comm. Batzing
