CITY OF CORTLAND LANDSCAPE AND DESIGN COMMISSION MINUTES – March 11, 2019 Mayor’s Conference Room at 4:00 p.m. Members Present: Mike Dexter (Chair), Melinda Shimizu, Anne Doyle, Paul Paradine, Theresa Quail, Diane Batzing Consulting Arborist: Jim Maloney Approve November 13, 2020 Minutes: Comm. Doyle, 2nd DEC Grant Application Updates: • Because just one plan for the Maintenance portion of the grant was submitted, our application was disqualified. • We expect to hear from the DEC regarding funding for the Inventory and Management application by May or June. DEC Chesapeake Bay Tree Planting Program Planning • Comm. Dexter expressed disapproval of the plan to plant trees over the gas line along Greenbush St. at the County Office Bldg. because it is old and may need replacing. Jim Maloney feels that because new lines are inserted through the old lines and the trees are not disturbed, planting should be fine. • Schichtel’s Nursery would like City funding approval for the Chesapeake Bay tree delivery. We will not ask the Council for advance approval because we can use funds in the National Grid 10,000 Trees and Growing fund and then reimburse it following receipt of DEC monies. Recent Tree Concerns/Notes • A Ruby Red chestnut on Woodcrest has a vertical split in the bark due to frost expansion. • An Autumn Blaze maple on Floral Ave. was run over by a vehicle, snapped off at the trunk; it will be replaced in 2021. Other • The Tree City recognition ceremony and workshop will be held on March 19th in Albany; Comm. Paradine will be attending. • Nineteen of the 20 concolor trees planted in May on the Church St. median are doing well. One did not survive the transplant process.
