CITY OF CORTLAND LANDSCAPE AND DESIGN COMMISSION Minutes - March 10, 2021 Via Zoom at 4:00 p.m. Members Present (Zoom): Mike Dexter (Chair), Paul Paradine, Theresa Quail, Melinda Shimizu, Diane Batzing Consulting Arborist: Jim Maloney Approve September 9, 2020 Minutes: Comm. Paradine, 1st; Comm. Dexter, 2nd Spring 2021 Tree Planing Planning • Funding sources for National Grid and Chesapeake Bay trees: The NGrid 10,000 Trees and Growing funds will pay for those trees. Because the Chesapeake Bay trees will be reimbursed following planting, Linda Armstrong will arrange for the Common Council to bridge that payment. Jim Kisker of Schichtel’s Tree Nursery has inquired about assurances of payment upon delivery. • Greenbush St. gas line planting along the County Office Building parking lot: Comm. Batzing will communicate with safety officer Doug Spafford (NYSEG) and Nic Dovi (DPW) to affirm planting plans, as well as County maintenance supervisor, Chuck Miller. • Planting volunteers: Comm. Batzing has communicated with Keith Palm, supervisor for the Cortland National Honor Society, regarding student participation in planting trees at the High School. • Comm. Paradine suggested that rather than replace the disfigured oak tree at 4 Church St., we should prune it appropriately to see if it responds well. The commissioners agreed. Recent Tree Concerns/Notes • Discussed the status of the YWCA linden tree to be removed by National Grid. • A 2020 tree planted on Parker Ave. was uprooted and replanted. • Some branches on the Church St. concolor firs have been bent by this winter’s snow. The canopies need to be raised. • A tree was cut off at the stump by the new owner on12 Lincoln Ave.; he does not want a replacement tree. Other • Jim Maloney approved the 2020 10,000 Trees and Growing trees for our $450 credit. • We will ask Steve Broyles, SUNY Biology Dept., if he would be able to do a tree inventory with his class next fall.
