RE: Minutes of the Special Common Council Meeting held May 17, 2004
Mayor Boughton called the meeting to order at 6:50 P.M. The Pledge of
Allegiance and Prayer were offered. The members were recorded as:
PRESENT – McMahon, Burns, Trombetta, Calandrino, Saadi, Barry, Visconti,
Urice, Esposito, Nolan, Basso, Saracino, Cavo, Teicholz, Riley, Seabury, Stanley
ABSENT – Steinerd, Nagarsheth, Payton
17 PRESENT – 3 ABSENT – 1 VACANCY
Mr. Nagarsheth was on vacation and Mrs. Payton is ill
NOTICE OF THE SPECIAL MEETING – A special meeting of the Common Council of
the City of Danbury will be held on the 17th day of May, 2004 at 6:45 P.M. in the
Common Council Chambers in City Hall for the purpose of: 1. COMMUNICATION &
RESOLUTION – Additional Appropriation for the purchase of Textbooks.
Mr. Nolan made a motion to accept the call and return of service. Seconded by Ms.
Saracino. Motion carried unanimously.
PUBLIC SPEAKING
Eddie Davis, 41-14 Avalon Valley Drive, Superintendent of Schools – Expressed his
appreciation for increasing the schools portion of the budget. The budget has been
increased by four million dollars and he appreciates it. He will adhere to the Mayor’s
request to spend the money on textbooks and will use the money wisely.
1 – COMMUNICATION & RESOLUTION – Additional Appropriation for the Purchase of
Textbooks
RESOLVED by the Common Council of the City of Danbury:
WHEREAS, on May 4, 2004, the Common Council of the City of Danbury acted upon the
2004-2005 budget proposed by the Mayor and adopted an annual appropriation for the
maintenance of public schools within the city; and
WHEREAS, the Mayor and the Common Council wish to provide additional funds to
Danbury Board of Education to ensure that the educational goals of the school district
are achieved and the tradition of educational excellence continued; and
WHEREAS, the Mayor and the Common Council recognize that all funds appropriated by
the city for the maintenance of public schools is to be expended by and in the discretion
of the Board of Education; and
WHEREAS, the Mayor and the Common Council nevertheless wish to encourage the
Board of Education to use this additional funding for the purpose of purchasing
additional textbooks;
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
DANBURY, THAT the sum of five hundred thousand dollars ($500,000.00) is hereby
appropriated for the Danbury Public Schools and that the Mayor and the Common
Council further request that the Board of Education use said additional funds for the
purchase of textbooks.
Mr. Nolan made a motion to receive the communication and adopt the resolution
appropriating $500,000 for the purchase of textbooks. Seconded by Ms. Saracino.
The motion carried unanimously.
There being no further business to come before the Common Council a motion was
made by Mr. Nolan at 7:00 P.M. for adjournment.
