MINUTES ENVIRONMENTAL ADVISORY BOARD APRIL 12, 2024 MEMBERS PRESENT: Katherine Arnett, Niani Brown, Grace Dietsch (virtual), Sarah McKnight, Sarah Richard, Ellenmarie Wahlrab, Brian Williams MEMBERS ABSENT: Scott Eardley, Hillery Spearman STAFF PRESENT: Eric Borth, Mary Faulkner, Paul Fleischman, Felicia Graham, Julie Height, Keshia Kinney (virtual), Chris Lipson, Meg Maloney, Carolyn Moore, Michael Powell (virtual), Alissa Schriner, Zak Schultz, Matthew Worsham OTHERS PRESENT: Sarah Holod – Public Health Spencer Thomas – Public Health Walt Hibner (virtual) – CenterPoint Energy John Woodman – Solid Waste District Marshall McKnight - Citizen Chairperson Katherine Arnett called the meeting to order at 12:05 p.m. and introductions were made. Citizen’s Concerns: None Approval of the March 2024 Minutes: Chairperson Katherine Arnett called for a motion to approve the March 2024 Minutes. Brian Williams suggested a change pertaining to a neighborhood meeting he attended. It was three neighborhoods meeting at the same time and not three separate meetings. Sarah Richard made a motion to accept the minutes with the proposed change; Brian Williams seconded the motion. A vote was taken, and the minutes were accepted with the change. Staff Items: Paul Fleischman presented a Source Water Protection Area Update presentation with help from Zak Schultz and Spencer Thomas. Keshia Kinney gave some insight concerning testing emerging contaminants. At next month’s meeting, there will be a “Walk through the Website” presentation. Sustainability: Meg Maloney shared that an $85,000,000 grant was submitted last month for solar on Valleycrest and the Green Revolving Fund project. Matthew Worsham has been focusing on this application his first month working with the City. The City has intervened in the AES Smart Grid Case. This is to represent the City’s residents, especially low-income residents, and businesses to make sure the increase is equitable. More updates when a settlement is reached. Economic Development: No Update Water Committee: A meeting is being coordinated for May 1st or 15th with Felicia Graham to review the rules. Public Health, Dayton and Montgomery County: Spencer Thomas encouraged everyone to volunteer for the Children’s Water Festival next month. Solid Waste District: Tomorrow will be the next Styrofoam collection event at Rose Music Center in Huber Heights. The next quarterly event will be in July in Dayton, location still to be determined. On Saturday, August 10th, there will be a family friendly festival, Nourishing Montgomery County, a Celebration of the Local Food System, at Levitt Pavilion. On Sunday, August 25th, Solid Waste will be hosting a zero-waste event at the Dragon’s game. They are looking for Waste Ambassadors volunteers to help educate the attendees. ENVIRONMENTAL ADVISORY BOARD -2- April 12, 2023 Five Rivers MetroParks: No update. University of Dayton: Sarah Richard is planning the move out collection in May, which is a big event. She also passed around a flyer with information on upcoming Earth Day events in April and May. MVRPC: No update. Community Outreach: Niani Brown had a template brochure to use at events or leave at public buildings, explaining the EAB and sharing information. She is looking for input or suggestions for the flyer. Karen Thomas, Marketing Director for the City of Dayton, Department of Water, will need to approve brochure before sending to Public Affairs for final approval. Public Affairs can finalize the graphic design and supply the QR code. Old Business: Chairperson, Katherine Arnett, attended the announcement by Governor DeWine of the Aqueous Film Fighting Initiative. She shared that it was very interesting, but it appears to be a while before being at a municipal level. Sarah Richard shared that she is willing and able to help at the luncheon at the Children’s Water Festival next month. Katherine Arnett is also willing to help. New Business: Felicia Graham mentioned that the Department of Water will be hosting a Water Career Conference for High School students on May 7th at UD Arena. Please see her if you are willing to volunteer. Sarah Richard expressed an interest in University of Dayton having a booth at the conference. With no other board business to discuss, Brian Williams made a motion to adjourn, and Sarah Richard seconded the motion. The meeting was adjourned at 1:05 p.m.
