APPROVED MINUTES SENIOR CENTER ADVISORY BOARD CITY OF DERBY June 9, 2021 9:32 AM ROLL CALL JIM BURGESS DIANE SCHMITT, TREASURER DIXIE CHAPMAN – VICE CHAIRMAN ELEANOR UNDERWOOD, CHAIRMAN TOM DAVIDSON, SECRETARY MARSHA VOLZ JANICE NEAGLE CITY STAFF KIEL MANGUS - ABSENT BREANNA MONK KIM HART Public Forum Agenda Item #1 RE: NCOA Donation Letter BreAnna showed the Board members a donation letter from NCOA. Discussion was held and it was decided the Board did not want to make a donation to the NCOA since they already pay dues. RE: Breakfast Tasting BreAnna Monk said Thursday morning June 10th at 9:00 AM she will prepare biscuit and gravy with sausage patty for the Board to sample. This would be a possibility for a breakfast fundraiser for the Advisory Board. RE: 40 Under 40 BreAnna let the Advisory Board she just received an award “40 Under 40”. This is an award that is given out by the Wichita Business Journal. Discussion was held and the Board applauded. RE: City Council Members BreAnna said all of the City Council Members have now been placed on the mailing and will be receiving future Prime Times Newsletters. Interviews for the City Council Members will be done by the Marketing Department and will also be ran as a Spotlight in the Prime Times. RE: Mennonite Café in Durham BreAnna said this will be one of the first trips planned once they resume. Discussion was held and the Jim Burgess suggested Gossell since it is much closer and has a Mennonite Café as well. BreAnna said they will keep that in mind when planning this trip. RE: Partner with Doctors 1 BreAnna said she will be working with the DRC to have outreach clinics at the Derby Senior Center. RE: LED Signs BreAnna stated the city is working on the LED signs for the Senior Center so it is pending at this time. RE: Promotion of DSC Activities BreAnna stated she passed the request to the Marketing Department to promote more of the DSC activities on Facebook and the Website. RE: Senior Center Outdoor Flowers BreAnna let the Board know she met with Robert Mendoza Director of Public Works to discuss flowers being planted to decorate the building around the Senior Center. They will be planting flowers and it will be necessary to get volunteers to water these flowers. RE: Senior Center Promotion Pamphlets BreAnna stated Senior Center pamphlets are ordered and it is in process to work with the local churches to place pamphlets in their facility. RE: Ambassadors BreAnna spoke with the Board about an Ambassador Program where the Board Members would go with her to future speaking engagements to discuss the Derby Senior Center. RE: Men’s Activities BreAnna explained to the Board that for Horseshoes, sidewalks are necessary so the location would need to be on the West side of the Senior Center. BreAnna will shop for a Horseshoe set as well as other yard games like Shuffle Board. BreAnna also said she will compare pricing on table Shuffle Board and outside Shuffle Board and report back to the Board. RE: Returning Activities BreAnna stated that probably in August some of the returning activities will be Can We Talk, Intercultural and Pioneer Senior. RE: Multi-Purpose Room Rental BreAnna stated the Multi-Purpose Room will not be available to rent. RE: Channel 7 2 BreAnna stated that Channel 7 exercise class is still having issues and they are still working on getting this free channel aired. RE: Comcare BreAnna explained to the Board that for the past several months Comcare has provided counselors to make call to homebound seniors that have been affected by Covid-19. RE: Laura Friend Jim Burgess asked BreAnna if there was a replacement for the Activity Coordinator position. BreAnna stated we are in the interview process at this time. RE: Austin Room Remodel Diane Schmitt asked BreAnna if there would be an interruption of the projection screen in the Austin Room. Diane stated Kiel Mangus reported at the last Advisory Board meeting there would be no interruptions of activities during the remodel. BreAnna agreed all activities should continue with no interruptions. Agenda Item #2 RE: Advisory Board Fund Report May 2021. Diane Schmitt gave the report for the Advisory Board Fund report May 2021. Diane reported there was $0 in revenue and $4,440.36 in expenses for a total balance $12,405.41. MOTION: Janice Neagle moved the Advisory Board Fund Report for May 2021 be approved: Dixie Chapman seconded. VOTE: 6 yea, motion carried Agenda Item #3 RE: Approve May 12, 2021 Minutes. MOTION: Jim Burgess made a motion to approve the May 12, 2021 minutes. Janice Neagle seconded. VOTE: 6 yea, motion carried Agenda Item #4 RE: Approve May 2021 Derby Dash Scholarship Report 3 BreAnna gave the May 2021 Derby Dash Scholarship Report. $0 were used for senior scholarships. BreAnna said the non-senior Derby Dash Scholarship Program used $352 for an ending balance of $1,658. MOTION: Diane Schmitt made a motion to approve the Derby Dash Scholarship Report for May 2021. Tom Davidson seconded. VOTE: 6 yea, motion carried Agenda Item #5 RE: Suggestion Cards BreAnna read the suggestion cards to the board. BreAnna said she contacted the Patron who had a complaint last month about coming to an activity and did not feel welcomed. BreAnna convinced the Patron to come back and there are Board members who will assist in her transition when she returns. Agenda Item #6 RE: COVID-19 Updates BreAnna stated there are new signs posted regarding the new mask wearing policy which state you do not have to wear a mask in the City buildings if you have been vaccinated. Agenda Item #7 RE: Senior Garden BreAnna stated the slab was poured and the shed has been delivered and secured. The donated wood, nails and plastic have been delivered. Construction of the garden is pending until the fence is built. BreAnna said she is waiting to see if the grants are approved. Agenda Item #8 RE: Classroom Mirrors BreAnna stated the Mirror Wall is ordered and will be installed when the company gets in contact. BreAnna will send a request to Facility Maintenance to remove the white board from the wall where the mirrors will be applied. ADJOURNMENT MOTION: Tom Davidson made a motion to adjourn.
