INTEROFFICE MEMORANDUM
TO: CITY COUNCIL
MICHELLE FISCHER
FROM: STACY QUALLS, MARKET MANAGER
SUBJECT: FARMERS MARKET UPDATE
DATE: 4/1/2015
Spring has arrived and the market is beginning to burst with the bounty of the season. More farmers
are returning and new applications have been accepted. Starting this month, Texas Hills Vineyard from
Johnson City will be selling wine by the glass. We invite you all to enjoy a glass of wine while browsing
the market.
Bee Creek Farms from Spicewood is a new vendor who will be offering Peaches and Pears starting in late
May.
Other new vendors are Bradley’s Microgreens and The Fish Tender.
After discussion by the Farmers Market Association Board and the City Treasurer, a decision was made
for the market to not participate in SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program). The program,
which allows for low income families to use their SNAP cards to purchase food from the farmers market,
would require too much time and the City doesn’t have the resources to devote to it at this time. The
farmers market would like to encourage the individual vendors to become participants in SNAP so that
all members of our community can enjoy the benefits of eating local produce.
The farmers market is very pleased to hear that plans are in the works to fix the washed out culvert in
the parking lot. This improvement will be appreciated by our customers.

Hi Seanna,
Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. I'm sorry I couldn't answer my phone
on Wednesday but that is when we have our farmers market. Thursday morning I
left for Minneapolis to spend Easter with my family. I will be back Monday
night.
The grant we are applying for is from the Texas Department of Agriculture. They
would like us to partner with a nutritionist to put on four separate presentations at
the farmers market. Our market is open every Wednesday from 3-7pm. The
presentations need to take place between May 1 and November 15, 2015. The
presentations need to showcase produce from the market and teach consumers
about nutrition and preparing healthy meals.
The grant will reimburse us to purchase/rent the equipment necessary (P.A.
system, plates, utensils, canopy, chairs, food) and to advertise the events.
We have a volunteer board that would be willing to help plan and prepare for the
events as well.
I look forward to speaking with you next week.
Happy Easter!

I spoke with Lindsey Smith (512-524-2953 ext 101) from Belterra on 4/7/15
The Event is at the Belterra rec center Saturday May 9th 12-4pm.
Set-up begins at 10:30am.
They would like us to bring 6 small watermelons to use as bowling balls and other sliced watermelons to pass out as
treats. We could set up a 10x10 canopy with farmers market items to sell.
They will provide the bowing pins.
I told her we would make a decision on April 14 at our board meeting. She'd like to know asap to be able to include us
in their marketing.
Sounds like a great opportunity to promote the market to the Belterra community. Unfortunately I will be in Las Vegas
that weekend.

Hi Shermayne,
Thank you for thinking of including the farmers market in your big event on May 9th. A couple quick
questions;
What is the theme of the event?
Would we have a booth space to sell produce along with managing the watermelon bowling?
Are you looking for our food vendors to participate as well?
I will discuss this opportunity with the farmers market board and get back to you asap.
My mobile number is 512-633-1765.
I look forward to hearing from you,

Hello! We are helping plan a big event at Belterra on Saturday, May 9th from noon to 4. We are
thinking of having a watermelon bowling area and then give out some watermelon slices and other
fruit. We thought this would be a great way to pull in the Dripping Springs Farmers Market. Is this
something you think you would be interested in helping to plan and oversee? If so, let us know the
prices for the watermelons and any other fees. We are expecting about 800 people at this event!
