seconded the motion. It was approved unanimously.
Peter Coyle reported that the City’s relevant departments are still reviewing the draft
public art policy and implementation documents
Coyle reported that the artists for the Civil Rights Mural project is having discussions
about alternate possible locations for the mural.
The committee discussed the idea of creating an updated inventory of public art in
Durham and discussed what information should be included. The existing inventory on
the Durham Convention and Visitors Bureau web site has limited information and does
not include photos of the works. Margaret DeMott will contact E’Vonne Coleman-Cook
of DCVB to discuss expanding and improving the existing site rather than creating a
completely different one. Cathy Bartlett, Dan Ellison, Noel James and Jessica Moore
volunteered to work on the project and to make contact with other agencies. The Durham
Public Schools, the Public Library and the Museum of Durham History will be contacted
to participate. Hough will work on a list of works on the Duke Campus and information
about the Bull City Connector bus shelters. Kenneth Rodgers will do the same for the
NCCU campus. Bartlett will collect information from Raleigh-Durham Airport,
Southpoint Shopping Center and Northgate Shopping Center. The committee made a list
of other locations to target in the project and discussed using student interns on the
project. Ellison will look into possibilities for engaging Duke students.
The meeting adjourned at 10:00a.m.
The next meeting will be Tuesday, April 23, 8:00am, at the Durham Arts Council.
