Durham Cultural Advisory Board PUBLIC ART COMMITTEE Meeting, March 26, 2013, 8:00 a.m. Urban Design Studio, City Hall MINUTES Members Present: _X_ Kathy Bartlett ___ Todd H. Bond ___ Matthew Coppedge ___ Sherry DeVries _X_ Dan Ellison _X_ Mark Hough _X_ Noel James _X_ Jessica Moore _X_ Kenneth Rodgers ___ Linda Shropshire ___ Karen Slotta OEWD Staff Present: _X_ Peter Coyle ___ Joy Mickle-Walker Also Present: Lisa Miller, Margaret DeMott Chair Mark Hough called the meeting to order at 8:10 a.m. Dan Ellison moved to approve the minutes of the February 26 meeting. Noel James seconded the motion. It was approved unanimously. Peter Coyle reported that the City’s relevant departments are still reviewing the draft public art policy and implementation documents Coyle reported that the artists for the Civil Rights Mural project is having discussions about alternate possible locations for the mural. The committee discussed the idea of creating an updated inventory of public art in Durham and discussed what information should be included. The existing inventory on the Durham Convention and Visitors Bureau web site has limited information and does not include photos of the works. Margaret DeMott will contact E’Vonne Coleman-Cook of DCVB to discuss expanding and improving the existing site rather than creating a completely different one. Cathy Bartlett, Dan Ellison, Noel James and Jessica Moore volunteered to work on the project and to make contact with other agencies. The Durham Public Schools, the Public Library and the Museum of Durham History will be contacted to participate. Hough will work on a list of works on the Duke Campus and information about the Bull City Connector bus shelters. Kenneth Rodgers will do the same for the NCCU campus. Bartlett will collect information from Raleigh-Durham Airport, Southpoint Shopping Center and Northgate Shopping Center. The committee made a list of other locations to target in the project and discussed using student interns on the project. Ellison will look into possibilities for engaging Duke students. The meeting adjourned at 10:00a.m. The next meeting will be Tuesday, April 23, 8:00am, at the Durham Arts Council.
