Cultural Advisory Board Chair Renee Leverty called the meeting to order at 8:05a.m. and
informed the committee that Chair Mark Hough is out of town on business.
Dan Ellison moved to approve the minutes of the March 26 meeting. Kenneth Slotta
seconded the motion. It was approved unanimously.
Peter Coyle reported that the City’s relevant departments are still reviewing the draft
public art policy and implementation documents
Coyle reported that the artist for the Civil Rights Mural project is still having discussions
about alternate possible locations for the mural.
Leverty reported that Liberty Arts is working on an idea for a “Bull City Sculpture”
annual show in Central Park. The Park administration and the City’s Parks and recreation
Department have been contacted about the idea.
Coyle reported that the current terms for committee members Todd Bond, Noel James,
Linda Shropshire and Karen Slotta will expire on June 30. All are eligible to apply for
new, two year, terms. The Cultural Advisory Board will advertise the availability later
this spring and aim to appoint members in its July meeting. Members should review what
James has done and suggest additions to it.
Leverty informed the committee of the Creative Entrepreneur Expo, co sponsored by the
Cultural Advisory Board, Durham Arts Council, Small Business Advisory Committee,
the Office of Economic and Workforce Development and the Durham Convention and
Visitors Bureau, to be held on May 16, 2013. Coyle will send the committee detailed
information when it is available.
Lisa Miller updated the committee on the Blackwell/Corcoran/Foster Street project being
developed in coordination with the North Carolina Arts Council SmArt Grant project. A
SmART Grant was awarded to the Durham Arts Council in a cooperative partnership
with multiple local departments and agencies.
The meeting adjourned at 9:03a.m.
The next meeting will be Tuesday, May 28, 8:00am, at the Durham Arts Council.
