Kathy Bartlett seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. Hough introduced the committee’s new members – Chris Ogden, Joanne Andrews, Steven Gatlin and Heather Gordon. Hough introduced Brenda Miller Holmes who updated the committee on the status of the Civil Rights Mural project. She discussed her efforts to identify an alternate site to replace the 112 W. Main Street site originally chosen, but unavailable due to the change of ownership of the building. She discussed the difficulties she has encountered in the Historic preservation Commission process to get approval for painting on downtown walls. Renee Leverty reported that, as Chair of the Cultural Advisory Board, she will be speaking at the September Historic preservation Commission meeting to begin discussions on how the commission and the committee can work together to encourage public art projects downtown. Lisa Miller will meet with Holmes to provide advice and assistance as the City staff person responsible for the commission. Peter Coyle reported that work is progressing on a Durham County Government RFP for a public art project under the Durham Expressway overpass on Blackwell Street. Hough introduced Matthew Coppedge of Downtown Durham, Incorporated. Coppedge introduced Bill Kalkhoff and sculptor Al Frega. DDI will be proposing the donation to the City of a sculpture by Frega, to honor Kalkhoff. They are requesting that the work be installed in CCB Plaza. Frega, distributed photographs of the model he has designed for the piece, an abstract work combining a chalice-like central element and other elements suggestive of a city skyline. The piece will be made from recycled metal saved from downtown buildings and the former downtown trolley tracks. The intended scale is eight to ten feet in height for the actual work. The committee discussed the work at length and there was general consensus that the piece would be a desirable addition to the plaza. Coyle explained the process for approving the work, which will require DDI to submit a formal application for review by the committee and several city departments. Coppedge indicated that he would complete the application as soon as possible and submit it to Coyle for distribution to the committee members. Hough discussed the public art inventory project and thanked Noel James for the work she has done to date on the project. He suggested a completion date goal of may 14 to coincide with the Liberty Arts sponsored public art show in 2014. James suggested recruiting students to help with the research process. Hough will send a spread sheet showing the work done to date. Kathy Bartlett offered to create a Word document about the inventory. Sherry DeVries suggested that a gallery could be set up on the EverWondr web site. Steven Gatlin suggested that his students from the Voyager Academy might be available to work on the project. Kenneth Rogers will look at potential people with curatorial skills to assist the process. Karen Slotta requested that Coyle circulate to the committee copies of the Public Art process documents and forms developed by the committee. He will do so before the next committee meeting The meeting adjourned at 9:13am.
