Brian Smith’s Updates: New Director of OEWD: -Andre Pettigrew effective start date of 5_14_17 -Came from Denver -Past focuses has been on clean energy Frontier Art Alcoves Project -2 Submissions, 1 strong out of 2 -Frank Kreacic selected, 3-D artist, 3-D glasses can be used to view - “Charging Durham” features bull, train, map and people to represent Durham - Aluminum composite -1 year life expectancy or maybe it moves somewhere else -committee suggested an anti-graffiti varnish top coating -it will be installed in 3-4 weeks -thoughts discussed around doing a unveiling/ribbon cutting event Black Wall Street Gardens -the movable chairs and tables are out, with high acceptance, and none stolen Southern Boundaries Park Mural Project -2 submissions, 1 strong and one not so much -Charlene Reiss was on the panel -Julia Gartrell and Julia Alexander are the selected artist team -park is in a unique spot in the midst of three very demographically different communities so it will be interesting to see how the artists engage the community and represent the community in the project -Ogden suggested honoring Howard Clement (either here or elsewhere) -Discussion continued around the team researching the history of the actual area for the project Signal Boxes -Shrink wrap material for first trial run -one box in front of the museum of life and science off Murray Ave. -Meisha, previous intern had measured it -Butterfly house and butterfly imagery will be incorporated into the design -Hoping to have contract in place next month (June) -Also looking ahead for a partnership program to assist with the additional painted boxes projects. Partner the city’s “Youth Works Program” with a business and gives them skills, 5 youth would work with Brenda Miller Holmes. Pay the youth and Brenda for 5 weeks. -Plan id to paint 3 boxes June – July -INTERESTING NOTE: Art was the top choice of over 150 out of 500 applicant kids surveyed for the program. Play that up and make that newsworthy! Gather that specific data. Ogden suggested sharing this with DCVB. Sherry DeVries noted that 24K people follow them on social media. -14-24 age range for the “Youth Works” participants Main Street Lighting Project -Brian met with Matt of DDI as well as Kevin Lilly and Alex in General Services -New plan for Five Points is to replace the sad bollards and install something taller poles/lighting that could then power string lights to be a strung across that plaza area -12 ft tall then power up to string up and over in the tree canopy. This will provide light but also let the trees hopefully sleep. -Aiming for Nov 30, city mandated goal -Other lighting project Black Wallstreet Park still on track -Potential for banners in the plaza to represent the various festivals and big happenings in Durham as they occur. FENCE update (Chris Ogden) -2,100 total applications…most they have ever had; great response, with high quality! -jurying is under way -Brooklyn is first fence -Will need volunteers/help for installing, promoting, celebrating, giving tours of the FENCE. -Dedication is targeted for 2nd or 3rd week in August - PLAN: The UPI FENCE team will come from Brooklyn Tuesday night, fence already shipped ahead. Work on Wednesday to zip tie the vinyl to the fence, Thursday is rain date/cushion day. Friday have the unveiling in the afternoon. -Good idea to tie this opening in to 3rd Friday Durham on August 18th -Where is this getting drop-shipped to? Work out those logistics with Stacey/Brain. Stacey said the loading dock at City Hall could be used to unload and store until installation. -Invite the city officials to various milestones so they aren’t there all at once. -Engage Cora Cole McFadden, Mayor Bill Bell, City Manager Tom Bonfield…run this through public affairs since they help to arrange the schedules accordingly for the public officials. Stacey and Brian working on that meeting/facilitation. -Think about engaging the County side (via Drew Cummings). -Cason Whitcomb is the incoming Public Art Intern and current intern will pass this involvement off to them -Connect Centerfest to the Fence. How do we do that? In program? Flyer at the event? Could flyers be at one of the city department booths. If we provide guided tours (best time is 11a-4p for larger crowds) then DAC would list it in the “events program”. -Hit up the restaurants/bars around it so that they promote it and are engaged -Fence up from Aug 16 thru about the end of Nov. Then looking at a traveling show. -Other ideas for programming around the FENCE and for other groups to come visit the Fence. Send Chris additional ideas. -Ideas that the Durham Fence has initiated has helped the larger FENCE project think in new ways. SMART Grant Update (Sherry Devries and Margaret DeMott) -Past 6 months various phases -1st stage compliance: received cert of appropriateness (COA), also state and federal compliance as well as environmental compliance. -Jan 3 got final greenlight for the full $100,000 NEA -RFP national level went out in October. Dec 31 2016 was the deadline. -Still in the selection process. Now narrowed to 3 impressive teams. -Sherry shared a one-page sheet with non-public information. -Now the committee plans to have a 3 teams doing an initial design concept (contracted via money in the budget) so then out of that they will make the final selection. -Durham Area Designers leading the community engagement process -1st major partially federally funded public art project for Durham. This is a big deal and our moment to be on the national stage. -Maybe also see what potential these 3 teams would have for future projects -Mock ups will be due in August General Services Updates (Stacey Poston) -Durham Central Park $25,000 from Liberty. Durham Central Park Board matched $25,000. $50,000 now total for the Durham Central Park wall public art project. -New owner of the property but just an awareness. Shouldn’t be an issue. -Hope to have the call for art out in the next 6 weeks and use Café press through DAC to get the national connection and recognition -Exciting to have something rolling on each end of the SMART grant corridor. -Lenticular as a design idea. Committee suggested not to include that limiting push via the call for art. However, encourage artists to make the design equally exciting from each vantage point -City had submitted a grant with May 31 as the decision announcement. (Apologies, I forget what specific grant/project this was for) Bus Shelter Update (Stacey Poston and Kathy Bartlett) -2 have now busted during installation. -Set kick-off event once it is actually safely installed DPDHQ Update (Intern) -Powerpoint presentation shared -Outlined 9 priority areas and are ranked via importance -Broken down rough ideas of the different pieces. Looking at $130,000 for signature piece. -Gathering the documentation and curating the collection before they move out of the old Police Headquarters building. A General Order is outlining the procedures. -Oral history project in the works. Chris reminding intern to follow up with Sergeant Dave Piatt, who has a treasure trove of items (police class photos, individual shots, name badges, riot helmets, batons, patches, etc.) -Great partnerships on the project like with MODH, DC Library, National Law Enforcement Museum -RFQ is drafted for the signature piece -Working to secure funding for the $130,000 signature piece. Hoping to go live via July 10. -Sherry suggested potentially using Café to get national visibility and use of the public art network also ensures best practices. -Exterior by main entrance is the next priority with an estimate of $100,000 total for that part. Still need to work on those pieces that people care about more. Look at pinterest site again -Next interior wall and community room. Resident-created/rotating exhibits, budgeted $10,000 in this presentation. -Intern will share the 2nd part of the presentation at next PAC meeting in June -Notes to talk to Trish about lighting and electrical for art in various areas Other asides during the meeting -discussed various was to recognize Baba Chuck Davis -note to check out the Kid Ethnic video on Durham (via DCVB) -City groups are aiming to do an annual report highlighting all the public art projects of the year.
