Margaret DeMott called the meeting to order at 8:30am.

III. Adjustments to the Agenda
IV. Brannan Project Update
Jeremy Anderson from Coulter Jewell Thames, PA presented the revised public art proposal
for the Brannan. The original proposal was a chalice sculpture. Committee response was the
design was disconnected. Revised public art proposal is for a pavement treatment art
installation. The installation will be made with heavy duty concrete reinforced for vehicle
traffic. Design will be saw cut into the concrete with the addition of a 3 color penetrating
stain. Concrete cuts will be flush with the cement. There is potential for the proposed
pattern to continue down access path along Central Park. The project budget remains the
consistent with the original proposal of $3,500. At the time of the proposal there has been
no interaction with Central Park regarding the project.
MOTION: Motion to approve the Brannan ground plane art proposal with the following conditions:

1. Include a long term maintenance plan
2. Consult with representatives of Durham Parks and Recreation and Durham Central Park
regarding the proposed colors and pattern.
3. Brian Smith will serve as the City person of contact for final approval
(Reiss, Bartlett 2nd)
ACTION: Motion approved 6-0.
V. City Hall Art Alcoves Update
Art was installed July 14, 2017. Brian Smith is working with the Public Affairs office to create
an aluminum substrate sign crediting the work. Potential for the addition of QR codes to link
viewers to other sites.
No action required
VI. Traffic Control Box Art Update
Artist Brenda Williams working alongside the Durham Mural Crew youth will design and
install original art pieces on three traffic control boxes. Selected boxes include the
intersection of Club Road and Guess Road, as well as boxes in the Hayti and Wellons Village
neighborhood. Brian Smith presented the design for the Wellons Village piece.
No action required.
VII. FENCE: Durham Update
Opening ceremony will be August 18th at 4:00pm. Dickerson Fencing is sponsoring the
materials. Installation will be Wednesday, August 16, 2017
No action required.

X. Other Items:
Margate DeMott updated the committee on the potential for public art that the new public library.
The library’s walls are primarily glass but there is a commitment to a large art piece outside the
building. The interior glass walls offer potential for temporary transparent pieces.
