Call to Order Chair Chris Ogden called the meeting to order at 8:30am. II. New Downton Mixed Use Parking Garage Presentation Project Manager Henri Prosperi, General Services presented the New Downtown Parking Garage project including the public art plan and recently issued Public Art RFQ. The site is at the intersection of Rigsbee Avenue, W. Morgan Street, and N. Magnum Street. The project has allotted $100,000 for public art to be affixed along the outside walls of the parking Durham Public Art Committee Summary Minutes July 19, 2017 Page 1 of 3  CITY OF DURHAM PUBLIC ART COMITTEE garage. Two potential public art sites are identified in the “Public Art for the New Downtown Mixed Use Parking Garage” call for art: “The Gateway Location” and “Pedestrian Friendly, Visually Inviting Fabric Banners”. The Gateway location is at the corner of Mangum St. and Morgan St. The fabric banners would be hung above the Rigsbee Avenue alley. The plan currently states that the Gateway location is to be covered in perforated metal cladding affixed to a masonry lattice structure and the Fabric Banner location will have a base wall of concrete. Public art could be addictive or reductive to the cladding system and there is a possibility of growing the budget if building materials deemed are unnecessary for the installation. The call for artist qualifications was issued August 29, 2017 and will close October 19, 2017. Prosperi will request additional assistance from the PAC with jury selection. No Action Required. V. The FENCE: Durham Update August 18, 2017 opening ceremony was postponed due to the potential of a KKK rally and rescheduled on September 11, 2017. The rescheduled opening ceremony was canceled due to Hurricane Irma. On October 5, 2017 at 5:30pm the Click! Photography Festival will host a Pecha Kucha with FENCE photography winners at the Durham Arts Council. Additional upcoming programming will be with the “Through Their Eyes” project partnering with Tobias Rose, Creative Director of Kompleks Creative and the Robert Herr Middle School. No action required VI. OEWD Updates: Traffic Control Box Art Artist Brenda Williams worked alongside the Durham Mural Crew youth to design and install original art pieces on three traffic control boxes. Selected boxes included the intersection of Club Road and Guess Road, as well as boxes in the Hayti and Wellons Village neighborhood. All art has been installed on the boxes. Community comments surrounding the design for the Wellons Village box points to the need to solidify a Public Art Content Review Written Process. No action required. Trinity Park Foundation Sculpture The Trinity Park Foundation wishes to reinstall a sculpture honoring Marie Austen that was once installed in Trinity Park in the Markham St. and Buchanan St. median. Chair Ogden suggested the need for following precedent set by the Forest Hills sculpture purchase by Guy Solely and for the Foundation to first gather community input on the chosen location of the sculpture. CAB + Artist Grant RFQ In depth update next month. No action required. Other Upcoming Projects Upcoming projects include public art at Black Wall Street Gardens, the Chapel Hill Underpass, and Neighborhood Murals. No action required. VII. Old Business: None. VIII. New Business: None. IX. Other Items: SmART Grant Margaret DeMott reported that an artists’ proposal for the Corcoran Street Banner has been selected and will be announced publicly shortly. X.
