Call to Order Meeting was called to order at 8:31am Chair Chris Ogden. II. Roll Call III. Approval of Minutes IV. Adjustments to the Agenda V. Presentations i. Storm Water Restoration South Ellerbee Creek Laura Webb Smith of the City of Durham Public Works Department and artist and educator Lee Crawford presented the current South Ellerbee Creek Storm Water Restoration for the site of the current Duke Diet and Fitness Center concept plan. The concept plan is moving into design and permitting, which is expected to be completed within a year. Demolition of the Duke Diet and Fitness Center building has begun. To inform the design concept, Public Works collected community input through two public meetings, a design workshop, and two public surveys. Public Works is now coordinating with Lee Crawford and local area schools to incorporate  Public Art Committee temporary public art along the fencing encircling the construction site. There is the potential to display the 2017 FENCE:Durham Regional Winners along the fencing, as well. Major themes emerging from the community engagement sessions included boardwalks and connections to existing trail networks. Additionally, the public is interested in the artistic and education opportunities within the site. There will be no public access to the wetlands, as the water level will be highly variable based on storm water levels. Water is coming from Downtown Durham and Trinity Basin into a designed stream and wetland with one outlet to the South Ellerbee Creek. ii. Downtown Mixed-Use Parking Garage Initial Design Concept Presentation Lara Kaufman, of Public Ground Studio MOTION: To define the communications policy as follows: In the event the City of Durham requires a motion from the Public Art Committee to accept a design concept from Public Ground Studio before the next meeting on June 20, 2018 a motion request will be communicated over email and text message. The motion will then be open for voting over a three day period. (Ellison, Seiz 2nd) ACTION: Motion accepted 6-0. VI. New Business None. VII. Updates/Old Business i. The FENCE: Durham 2018 Judging is currently underway. The FENCE dedication ceremony will take place on August 17, 2018 at 3rd Friday. The ceremony will include docent-led tours of the FENCE. Chris Ogden has reached out to Click! 120 to determine partnership opportunity. ii. Durham Police Department Headquarters Complex Entered the contract phase with Artist David Wilson and his local team. Wilson is holding three community engagement events at Durham Technical College through May  Public Art Committee and June to inform initial Peace Mural design. Public engagement events will be held later in the summer. The mural will be installed along the Main St. corridor expected late September, early October 2018. iii. Neighborhood Park Mural Project The deadline for the Neighborhood Park Mural Project is May 16, 2018 at 11:59pm MST. The Artist Selection committee will select up to four artists to design and install murals at four city parks. iv. Black Wall Street Gardens Call for Artist The RFQ closed on May 4; the Artist Selection Committee received seventeen (17) applications. The Artist Selection Committee determined that three (3) of the seventeen (17) applicants had demonstrated capacity to execute a project of this scale and further decided to rerelease the call nationally. The Artist Selection Committee also determined that if a national artist or artist team were to be selected to this call they would be required to incorporate a capacity-building partnership with at least one (1) North Carolina-based artist or artist team. All applications and artist teams who submitted to the original call will still eligible to be considered in the rereleased RFQ. v. Other Project Reports SmART Grant: Working on contracts with local metal fabricator Steel City. Expected June installation. New Member On-Boarding New members will be on-boarded soon and will attend the June 2018 meeting. If any current members are interested in the on-boarding process please contact Chair Ogden. VIII.
