Recreation Advisory Commission October 19, 2023 Call To Order: A meeting of the Durham Recreation Advisory Commission was held on this day in person, October 19, 2023. In attendance Lesley Stracks-Mullem, Cedric Burke, Karthik Sundaramoorthy, Teah Rawlings, Girija Mahajan, Excused Absence Jill Thomas, Excused Absence Mike Johnston I. DOST Matching Grants are open with the deadline in November IV. Approval of Minutes and Fee Waivers (October) 1. Cedric Burke motioned to approve the September minutes and Fee Waivers as recommended by staff, seconded by Teah Rawlings. Approved Unanimously. V. Old Business/New Business 1. FY 24 Business Plan ▪ Wade Walcutt presented on the FY 24 Business Plan. The theme is “Connecting Communities, Creating Futures” You Belong Here! • Lesley Stracks-Mullem had a question on what engagement meant for the Department. a. Engagement is both internal and external with working with staff and the community what is needed and desired. • Are there any KPIs that focus on standards for pocket parks or neighborhood parks in new developments that will be needed. a. Yes, Audrey Vogel is focused on identifying open spaces and where there are gaps in park needs based on access to parks. ▪ Presentation Attached 2. Comprehensive Parks, Trails, and Open Space Systems Plan Resident Survey Results ▪ The survey has been sent out in two phases • Phase One: Statistically valid survey • 539 surveys completed a. 85% of households had visited a DPR park in the past year b. 75% of respondents rated parks and facilities as good or excellent c. 28% of respondents had participated in a program or special event d. 98% of respondents rated inclusivity and diversity in programs as excellent or good e. The overall quality of recreation programs and special events was rated as good (59%) or excellent (31%). • Phase Two: DPR pushed the same survey via marketing channels. a. The survey has been marketed via weekly social media pushes, City of Durham social media, it was in City Connect, at tabled events, through customer accounts in ActiveNet, to all annual survey respondents, and in blog posts. iii. The survey is available in English and Spanish. • The next phase of the Comprehensive Parks, Recreation, and Open space Systems Plan will be focus groups with community stakeholders.
