Durham Workers Rights Commission Meeting 05.24.2022- Virtually via Zoom Attendees: Ashlee Adams, Antonio Luster, Abigail Woten, De’Shaun Campbell, Stephanie Smith, Lisa Pratt, Melanie Stratton Lopez, Mirlesna Azor Sterlin, Charles Gooch, and Nancy Kalow. I. Agenda Items: II. CALL TO ORDER: 6:09pm III. PUBLIC COMMENTS – No one spoke during public comments. iv. MINUTES/OLD BUSINESS A. Note: The vote to approve the minutes from April, 26, 2022 was moved by Commissioner Kalow, and seconded by Commissioner Smith. Motion carried at 6:10pm. v. COMMITTEE UPDATES: A. Note: Chair Luster went over the bylaws and the 8 duties and responsibilities that this committee was charged with. Two of them had been accomplished; which were to establish the aspirational workers bill of rights and one research-based study in collaboration with another organization. Chair Luster took the remaining six duties and arranged three subcommittees to be tasked with all the duties and responsibilities to make accomplishment of these task easier. vi. B. Chair Luster went over the three subcommittees: Employer- Tasked with E and F of commission by laws, Public Engagement- tasked with A and C of commission by laws, Organizing Advocacy- Tasked with G and H of commission by laws. All parties agreed with the subcommittee idea. vii. C. Public Engagement and Employer were combined as a subcommittee and were tasked with A, C, E and F of commission bylaws. Commissioners Campbell and Sterlin showed interest in this subcommittee. A discussion was had on the areas of interest through a group messaging platform. viii. ANNOUNCEMENTS- A. Chair Luster stated that along with Commissioner Powell had been working with UE150 to try to revise the grievance policy for the City. ix. B. Chair Luster stated that equal employment opportunity and public accommodations form Durham Neighborhood Improvement Services had reached out to him, and they will discuss collaboration. x. C. Mayors Hispanic/Latino committee would like to do a PowerPoint presentation for June. xi. D. Commissioner Powell encouraged positive changes that could be used in the future. xii. E. Commissioner Smith discussed the significance “May Day.” xiii NO NEW BUSINESS WAS DISCUSSED XIV. Meeting Adjourned at 6:41pm XV. Next meeting: June 28th at 6pm XVI.
