Durham Workers Rights Commission Meeting 03.28.2023- Virtually via Zoom
Attendees: Brian Powell, Nancy Kalow, Charles Gooch, Council Member Johnson,
Mirlesna Azor-Sterlin

CALL TO ORDER: 6:18pm
PUBLIC COMMENTS – No one spoke during public comments.
MINUTES/OLD BUSINESS
A. Note: The vote on the February 28th minutes were held due to no quorum
B. Brian Powell reminded members of reappointments for the seats on the Board.
An email was sent to all members to reapply.
C. Brian Powell gave a reminder of the Southern Worker’s Assembly is in the
process of rebuilding and are not having any meetings at this time.

COMMITTEE UPDATES:
A. Note: Brian Powell stated there are no updates for the Workers+ Committee.
Updates forthcoming when information is received.
B. Momma Cookie will be honored with a Momma Cookie Day Proclamation on
April 3rd during the City Council Meeting at 6pm.
C. Brian Powell stated that on April 4th the Union of Southern Service workers will
be kicking off a multi-state strike.
D. Farm Workers from ‘Its Our Future” will be sharing their experiences with forced
meal plans on March 29th at 7pm (virtual).
E. Brian Powell shared the updates on the negotiations of the Grievance Policy
that the WRC has been helping to develop. A panel above the City Manager’s
Office would be created to be the official decider of Grievance Policy Matters.
F. Council Member Johnson shared that a Bill is pending but it does not include
City Workers. She stated that a Bill would have to be passed with the General
Assembly to include the entire Body not just Fire Fighters like the current
iv. B. pending Bill states.
