Park Improvements a) Playgrounds When it has rained, there were puddles at Candy Cane Park. They regraded this location to avoid future water issues and reseeded the grass. Huehnergarth has purchased new seats for all the swings at Candy Cane Park. He also plans to purchase new seats for Westside as well. Huehnergarth would like to purchase turf batting circles to help with the wear and tear of the grass and the rest would be limed. He plans to seek a grant for this through the Minnesota Twins. Also, we are looking at installing a concrete pad and turf for the batting cages. Decker Concrete is doing some work for the Field of Dreams so maybe we can piggyback on their project to make it cheaper. The batting cages are 85' so we would be able to put in a divider to have two distinct practice areas. With 2 batting cages, we will have 4 areas to practice. The concrete pads will extend outside of the batting cages. There will also be weights on the bottom of the net door to avoid it from blowing. Ungs also suggested that we just put lime everywhere with no grass at all. Huehnergarth thinks they look better with grass. Oberbroeckling asked if they were ever going to put permanent fences down at Candy Cane. Maybe down the road we can do it. Goldsmith asked about the bleacher shade to protect from foul balls. Huehnergarth said we may do something with Clear Span (FarmTek). Huehnergarth also said that raising the netting behind the backstop may solve the problem. We just need to be careful that it's not too tall that the wind takes it down. Motion made by Lang, seconded by Goldsmith. Voting Yea: Lang, Goldsmith, Frye, Ungs, Oberbroeckling 4. New Playground Equipment Huehnergarth stated that we can't really discuss this topic until we have more information from the possible donor. A banker is speaking with the donor at this time. The mayor has been talking to the banker as well. The commission is wondering if it would help to show the donor our ideas. Once we are sure that the donor is in, Huehnergarth will have a meeting with them. If this donor falls through, the commission feels like it is a needed item that we should look at fundraising or doing a capital campaign of some type. Motion made by Frye, seconded by Lang. Soccer Improvements a) Survey Huehnergarth sent out a survey regarding the soccer program and it has been up for about 1 1/2 weeks. He has received about 145 responses. He asked some opened ended questions. Some of the things people liked were: the variety of teams; games were on time and efficient; all kids get to play; coaches were great; competitive; all games were played at the same place; all the towns come together; and they liked the All Girls League. The areas that need improvement are: the younger refs need better training; the teams that make the Gold Bracket should have a consolation game for the teams that would be in 3rd/4th place; smaller roster size; better distribution for 1st/2nd grade; Senior League was a little intense, possibly divide girls & boys; play-off time changes on the schedule were frustrating (They had to change the game times because coaches had multiple teams at different age levels. Next time we will not list a time until we know who is playing.); and they want to only allow 2 coaches per team. It was also discussed to have a 3rd/4th grade All Girls team. 340 1st Avenue East, Dyersville, Iowa 52040 • Phone: 563-875-7724 • Fax: 563-875-8238 www.cityofdyersville.com  The things kids liked the best was the good competition; play-offs; playing with kids they didn't know before; and playing with kids that speak spanish. b) New Ideas Huehnergarth would like to have scoreboards for each field. We could possibly make them out of PVC. He is checking into this. Ungs recommended not having it for the Kindergarten or 1st/2nd grade levels because these scores can become quite lopsided. No fans between fields by kids. Putting coaches boxes out so they aren’t all over. It was previously asked how other towns run their sign-ups. Huehnergarth looked into this and all of them are run through their City Halls, except Clayton Ridge & New Vienna, which each have one team. Peosta has a keeper league, where kids stay on the same team and additional kids are added as kids age out. With Epworth/Farley, Jason Wernimont divides up the team. They do not have a lot of kids from Farley. They may need to advertise so they can get a Farley team and an Epworth team. Everyone agreed that once the draft happens, there should be no late sign-ups. Motion made by Lang, seconded by Goldsmith. Voting Yea: Lang, Goldsmith, Frye, Ungs, Kronlage, Oberbroeckling 6. Aquatic Center The aquatic center revenue/expenses were included. Huehnergarth felt that the Capital Improvements should be a depreciable asset to make it more realistic. Passes are guaranteed revenue – it doesn’t matter how often they go to the pool. We had more adults obtain individual passes. We plan to advertise better next year. In addition, we will encourage more pool parties by advertising that smaller groups are a lower cost and also accept parties in August. We have the same manager coming back next year, which will be helpful. It was asked if we had much traffic from out of town ball teams and the answer was "no". Motion made by Frye, seconded by Lang. Commission Member Comments Huehnergarth would like members of the commission to let us know in advance if they would like items on the agenda. 8.
