Event Update Natalie Daggett was introduced as the new Events Assistant. Pangborn’s Festival of Flight is scheduled for July 8, 2023. There will be a Big Band Dinner & Dance on July 7 to bring more heads to beds and proceeds benefit the Spirit of Wenatchee’s Aviation Scholarship. Havana Nights is scheduled for August 12, 2023. Tourism Darling Productions – Washington State Swap Meet Grants Darling Productions is requesting a total of $15,000 for the new Washington State Swap Meet, September 8-10, 2023. Nikki Marra talked about her application and answered questions. Jason Heins motioned to approve Darling Production’s Grant Application in the amount of $5,000 with an additional $100 per vendor that comes from 50 or more miles away for Washington State Swap Meet, September 8-10, 2023. City of East Wenatchee – Event Software & Sound System The City of East Wenatchee is requesting a total of $10,000 for event software and a sound system for City events. Events Director/PIO Trina Elmes talked about her application and answered questions. Short Description of the Activity* Display historic aircraft replica Miss Veedol in quasi museum setting; setting home to aircraft that visits regional and international airshows and fly-ins to commemorate the first nonstop airplane flight across the Pacific Ocean in 1931, terminating in East Wenatchee. Numerous flights in the area to celebrate events, attract crowds, etc. Describe the Prior Success of Your Activity* Dating to the mid-1990s the Spirit of Wenatchee raised the money and built an exact-as-possible replica of the first aircraft to fly from Japan to the continental United States. This was the first airplane flight across the Pacific Ocean. Landing above the Columbia River in 1931 at a site later to be known as Fancher Field, Clyde Pangborn and Hugh Herndon, Jr. put the Wenatchee Valley on the world's aviation map. East Wenatchee would not be incorporated as a city until 1935. Most people are fascinated with the Pangborn-Herndon story. The world's acknowledgment of this landmark flight today reflects the success of SOW in bringing the little-remembered event to world attention. Describe Your Target Audience* Aviation historians are the obvious targets but the general public is a close second. Most people are shocked to know there was a bookend flight to Charles Lindbergh's 1927 crossing of the Atlantic Ocean. The lack of publicity surrounding Pangborn and Herndon's flight is one of history's great mysteries. Describe How You Will Promote Lodging Establishments, Restaurants and Businesses Located in the City of East Wenatchee* Mostly through a draw of people coming to see Miss Veedol, spending a few hours with the aircraft then taking in dinner and a motel. We are actively supported by a large contingent of pilots, aircraft mechanics and interested citizens. East Wenatchee Rotary International is a close and avid supporter as are other valley groups and institutions. Pangborn and Hugh Herndon, Jr. and their contribution to aviation history through the completion of the first airplane nonstop crossing of the Pacific Ocean. We do this through airshow appearances, magazine and newspaper articles, TV appearances. The benefits to the community are the reactions to the appearance of the iconic Miss Veedol in the sky over such events as the Classy Chassis parade, the Apple Blossom festivities and events in the area parks and recreational facilities. How will you advertise, publicize or otherwise distribute information regarding your activity?* Continue to appear in publications and TV shows and actively pursue airshow venues with large turnouts. Our standard airshow posture includes free brochures and handouts describing current and future activities. We normally solicit donations to purchase fuel. Section II - Projected Tourism Benefit RCW 67.28 provides authority for cities and counties to use lodging tax for tourism promotion to attract visitors and encourage tourism expansion. State law also details certain reporting requirements for jurisdictions that levy a lodging tax. We than ran Zip Code reports for all of our ticket buyers and included the out of area guest into our data. The event was a Sold out crowd. We also did a 50/50 for Blue Shield helping raise couple thousand dollars for local law enforcement.
