Agenda Item No.1 Escondido Public Library Board of Trustees SPECIAL BOARD MEETING MINUTES Tuesday, April 14, 2015, 11:00 a.m. Library Turrentine Room CALL TO ORDER: Trustee Knight called the meeting to order at 11:03 a.m. Members Present: Elmer Cameron, Gary Knight, Mirek Gomy, Mayra Salazar, James Lund Members Absent: None Staff Present: Loretta McKinney, Director of Library & Community Services; Cynthia Smith, Deputy City Librarian; Janet Rulien, Recorder Library Support Groups Present: Friends of the Escondido Public Library, Pioneer Room Friends, Escondido Public Library Friends of Literacy Services, and the Escondido Library Foundation. WRITTEN/ORAL COMMUNICATIONS: None. LIBRARY WORKSHOP FOR LIBRARY SUPPORT GROUP BOARD MEMBERS & STAKEHOLDERS: Trustee Knight opened the Meeting and welcomed guests. Director of Library and Community Services Loretta McKinney introduced special guests in attendance, including Mayor Sam Abed, Councilmember Olga Diaz, and State Librarian Greg Lucas. Director McKinney also provided a brief explanation of the theme "Libraries at the Heart of Community," and an overview of the Meeting Agenda. Mayor Abed spoke to the attendees about the importance of the Library to the Escondido community and stated that he fully supports efforts to build a new Library and urges fellow council members to support this effort too. He stated that the Library is well-established in the community's fabric and he looks forward to supporting the Library in the City's future. Mayor Abed acknowledged that he has taken the opportunity to state his support on several occasions, most notably at the State of the City address. He stated that funding is the question at hand. Mayor Abed looks for the community to support the Library Expansion Initiative through their interest in the project, assistance with fund raising, and by voting. State Librarian Greg Lucas presented his perspectives on the current state of libraries. He affirmed that public libraries are an essential part of their communities and very important to California's future. Public libraries provide information, serve as community hubs, and will soon offer high speed internet access throughout the State. He commended Escondido Public Library as a shining example and early adopter of the California Broadband Initiative. Mr. Lucas recounted several examples of his positive experiences as the State's new Librarian. He committed to being accessible and supporting libraries seeking to build or expand their facilities. Jack Anderson, President of the Escondido Library Foundation, provided an update on the Foundation's accomplishments and future goals as they pertain to the Library Expansion. Mr. Anderson also gave a status update regarding the work of the Support Group Steering Committee , in helping to organize and develop strategies for creating partnerships throughout the community and planning a vibrant fundraising campaign. These plans are still in the early stages and groundwork is being laid, pending developments within the City. Agenda Item No.1 The Library Support Groups broke for lunch and participated in a Workshop exercise to identify individual community connections. They then combined their individual connections to those of other participants to begin to identify broader, community networks and areas of common ground.
