CALL TO ORDER: Mayor Bob - 8:05 p.m.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF QUORUM AND PROPER NOTICE
Present: 5- Linda Bob; Albert Eckian; Michael Holland; Karen LeHeup-Smith; and Kress Muenzmay
I. Workshop Item
14179 Workshop Regarding Naming and Renaming Public Facilities
Dianne Kramer, Acting City Manager, noted the information she had provided with sample policies
and asked for comments from the Commission.
II. Commission Discussion
The Commission discussed the following issues: 1) Not changing the regulatory name of any existing
street due to the cost to residents and businesses to make the change; 2) Providing honorary street
names; 3) Only naming streets with regulatory names at the time of construction; 4) Possibly
restricting honorary street names to state or national figures rather than local; 5) Developing a policy
for the handling of honorary designations particularly for parks or other City facilities; 6) Possibly
restricting honorary designations to deceased persons rather than living; and 7) Providing naming
rights to individuals that provide significant donations for construction projects.
III. Public Input
Gail Isaac- Thomas expressed support for anything named for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. being
located outside the African-American neighborhood.
IV. Commission Direction
CONSENSUS: It was a consensus of the Commission for Ms. Kramer to develop an ordinance and
bring it back to a second workshop. It was also agreed to allow for naming rights for significant
donations, for any memorial to Dr. King being placed where it is visible to the entire community and
for Ms. Kramer to bring back options for honoring Dr. King once the policy has been finalized.
