CITY OF EVERETT CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION MINUTES March 13, 2018 – 5 pm Van Valey House, 2130 Colby Avenue Commissioners Present: Alison Musch, Hugh Denny, Kati Nickerson, Elizabeth Person, Rosemary Jones, Maren Oates, Deb Fox, Cat Snapp, Cheryl Davis, Diane Wright, Yasmin Wisecarver-Baron, Kristen Keenan, Jason Grim. Commissioners Absent: Jessica Pavish Staff: Carol Thomas, Kimberly Shelton Guests: Nate Feaster, Hadassah Jones, Kim Mattson Acceptance of February Minutes: Rosemary Jones made a motion to accept the February Minutes. Diane Wright seconded. All in favor. None opposed. Nate Feaster gave an overview of Fisherman’s Village, March 30- April 1. He will email cultural arts commissioners directly with volunteer opportunities. Nate also invited the commissioners to attend the Leadership Snohomish business community socials. 125th Anniversary Celebration: Parks Department participation- Kim Mattson gave an overview of what the Parks department will be doing at the June 2 event at Everett Train Station- interactive games: ring toss, beanbag toss around giant plywood cutouts of animals that once lived at the Forest Park zoo. Cultural Commissioners brainstormed ideas for a community art experience at Everett’s 125th Anniversary celebration- June 2, Everett Station. Scavenger Hunt  Scavenger hunt from June to end of August with a map of historical landmarks or fun events to attend. All landmarks/ events should be accessible by bus or bike and should include points of interest throughout Everett.  Possible idea of commissioners introducing the landmarks/ events through short videos, uploaded to website.  Idea is a ‘treasure map’ with scavenger hunt landmarks/ events with award for completion a fun pin modeled after the Everett Pins we did last year.  Concern that the threshold for earning a pin might be too high- perhaps if someone participates in an art experience, they can earn a pin – for example, a National Night Out.  Important to roll out the scavenger hunt prior to June 2.  Carol will schedule extra planning meetings for the 125th celebration. National Night Out, August 7, throughout Everett Commissioners asked for an update on the sale of the Historic Everett Theatre. Carol will reach out to Curt Shriner for an update and present at the April commission meeting. Commissioner Reports: Maren Oates - Artist Garage Sale, June 2, Hoyt Avenue booth spaces are sold out and there’s a waitlist. Jason Grim – just opened his arts materials retail store at the Rockafella building- jagarts.com Mayor’s Directives: Carol mentioned possible ways the cultural arts commission can participate in the Mayor’s directive on community engagement and inclusion: Cultural Arts Commissioners – outreach to underserved communities in Everett during the August 7 National Night Out Cultural Arts Commission- youth representative to the commission? Volunteers- finding meaningful projects and ways to engage with the arts in Everett Student Internships- perhaps with commissioners as mentors? Note: Everett Essentials will continue this fall- class about the City and municipal government. Carol will let commissioners know when the applications are available. Meeting Adjourned: 6:30 p.m.
