CITY OF EVERETT CULTURAL ARTS COMMISSION MINUTES October 8, 2019 – 5 pm Van Valey House, 2130 Colby Avenue Acceptance of September Minutes: Motion to approve: Jason Grim; Seconded Kristen Boswell. All in favor Commissioners Present: Deb Fox, Jason Grim, Diane Wright, Terra Patterson, Cat Snapp, Kristen Boswell, Commissioners Absent: Maren Oates, Elizabeth Person, Hugh Denny, Cheryl Davis, Rosemary Jones, Kati Nickerson Guests: Madison Miller, David Lotz Staff: Carol Thomas, Lisa Newland Introduction- newest commissioner- Terra Patterson. Deb Fox: update on conversation with school leadership about student involvement- asked commissioners to consider being volunteer judges of the school district’s middle school and high school art shows. Middle school judging May 5 – 6. High school judging April 6 – 7. Judging takes place at the Everett Public School District Community Resource Center, 3900 Broadway. Commissioners are also encouraged to attend the art openings: Middle school reception: May 27th, 6- 7:30 p.m. High school reception: April 15, 6 – 7:30 p.m. Cultural Arts Commission grant values and process: update from subcommittee  Need a small subcommittee to review grants before taking to full commission. Week of Nov 25. Wintertide, Dec 5 - need volunteers to help with the Santa picture line and with crafts and activities: Kristen and her sister will help, Deb Fox. Wendt & Mayor’s Arts Awards brainstorm: how to increase the appeal of the evening- through local music, artists, etc. Perhaps have a photographer taking pictures of guests that can be instantly uploaded to social media. Terra Patterson has good ideas how to make this work. Perhaps a photobooth? Big projections on the side of the EPAC? The revolving Wendt Award logo that Deb Fox created? Starlights? Perhaps a guest emcee? Poet or comedian? The performances last year were a big hit and elevated the energy of the evening. Public Art Updates- Evergreen Branch Library, Broadway Art & Hoyt Ave, murals Carol Thomas gave an update on Evergreen Branch Library suspended sculpture due to begin installation October 9th. Broadway Art: Brian Borrello will present his sculptures to the cultural arts commission and community in November, date still to be determined. We are still waiting on funding commitments before contracting with Invisible Creature to create a mural on the Il Paraiso building on California Ave. Cat Snapp voiced the concern that there was not a call for artists on this project. Invisible Creature was selected by the building owner who is funding 50% of the project cost. Cultural Arts Commission – current vacancy and end of year vacancy, position 1. December meeting- appointment of Cultural Commission Chair and Vice Chair for 2020 Cultural Arts Commission meeting location discussion: discussed whether to keep holding the commission meetings at the Van Valey House or move them to City Hall. Deb Fox will poll the commissioners. New Business Jason Grim is hosting a Glow Show with blacklight art from 14 artists. October 19 at JAG Artworks. Kristen Boswell is hosting two pop-up markets, November 30th at the Schack and December 19th at the Scuttlebutt Tap Room. Citizen Comments Madison Miller talked about a new project to put Winter Wonderland themed display windows throughout downtown Everett, in time for Small Business Saturday. It was suggested she take a look at how Shunpike does artist- designed display windows in Seattle. Shunpike pays artists a stipend to fill vacant windows. David Lotz asked for an update on Parklets Day. Madison Miller said the day was a success with 9 parklets in downtown. She anticipates more participation next year when the renovation of Hoyt Ave and Rucker Ave is complete and downtown is less congested.
